Yeah, never heard of ammunition being so unstable as to cook off because of heat….and where did it wind up going? Surely all the rounds did’nt wind up in the cannon breech, I would assume maybe one went through the cannon barrel and the rest just cooked off (if they did at all) in whatever direction they were facing, which would probably mean that the plane’s nose got destroyed?
M
Actually a very positive and fitting write up for a very negative event….the plane and the man will be missed…takes me back to 1995 at Jeffco in Denver when Jack Rosamund flew his F-86 into the ground at an airshow here, the only fatality I have ever witnessed at an airshow….and I still recall it vividly….
M
Have yet to see her in person in these colors as I missed her last year and she passed too far north this summer to see her….hope she’s still wearing them when I get to see her again!
M
Wow.
M
Great shots, all of them…but REALLY love the Corsair shots!!
M
We’ve also forgotten the MEMORABLE Don Johnson/Mickey Rourke film ‘Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man’ in which the good guys and the bad guys have a gun battle in amongst the cocooned remains of several ’50’s and 60’s and 70’s era aircraft, most of them ex-military, also presumably filmed at D-M.
M
LOL….good one….which explains why the japanese in WWII never proceeded with mounting an 18 inch gun intended for a future Yamato class battleship in the belly of a Betty bomber and using it against American carriers….either by firing it or just DROPPING it on the carrier itself…
M
No one mentioned the episode of Michael Landon’s TV series ‘Highway to Heaven’ in which an old B-25 pilot gets to fly a B-25 towards the end of the show again on his way to heaven….I remember this show specifically because I was present for part of the filming while I was working in Morro Bay, CA…the opening sequence shows the PG & E smokestacks in Morro Bay, looking like 3 gigantic battleship guns pointed skyward, and the boat I was living in at the time is shown in there somewhere….Landon came over one day while we were unloading a fishing boat, looked into the hold of the boat at a VERY surprised looking friend of mine who was shovelling the fish (I was operating the boom)…and he says “You could’nt pay me enough…” and walks off…..never liked the guy much after that….
Mark
Blub blub blub….don’t look like they removed much of the military equipment from it, does it? All mast and radar antennae and guns and such still in place….’course, at THAT deep a depth, who’s gonna be able to get to it to pick it over?
M
Who wrote that they thought this was a ‘Salem’ class cruiser? it most certainly is NOT…it IS the USS IOWA….
M
Man, seeing the IOWA just sitting there like that instead of on display in San Fran due to the politicians and their ‘political correctness’ just PISSES ME OFF…someone PLEASE make the right decision and get her berthed and on display for the masses!!

A number of years ago at Midland TX the CAF’s Corsair hit a turkey buzzard that left a sizeable hole in the wing….it landed safely….
M
K, now , the T-6 and the F-18 I did’nt think would go together….but it appears I was wrong….
I recognize a certain French Canadian’s Focke Wulf in there…lol…
Good stuff Eric, looks like the Hurri is perfectly happy in Canada (wait’ll winter tho…)
And nice to see our old part time Colorado resident SL721 in such good hands….she used to be based part time in Southern Colorado with the Woodses…
Mark
Midland….oy vey….why anyone would go there in the first place absolutely confounds me….if it were’nt for the airplanes I would NEVER venture there…..flat……dusty…..no vegetation…..little water…..the east looks like the west looks like the south looks like the north….so many other worthwhile locations to re-locate the CAF and they picked quite possibly the MOST drab location they could find…hell, even Harlingen had some animation to the landscape surrounding it….yet every once in a while, I still find myself down there, walking the flightline….
Wish Breckenridge still had a show….now THAT was fun!!
Mark
Still hoping for an answer on the Corsair……anyone?
