Um….you mean has it left FOR the USA yet…?

TRy just typing in http://www.planeboats.com I think the rest of my sentence above is what’s screwing it up….I type it in and it takes me right there…
Um…as far as the use of the plane as a boat….I can understand the problems some folks would have with this…but at least it HAS retained it’s original look and interior (enough to be used in the ‘Aviator’ movie, even if the footage wound up on the cutting room floor…) I guess it comes down to whether the parts existed to restore it as a PLANE when the guy turned it into a boat…but then it was his money he spent so I guess he gets to make the choice on what he does with it..

MacArthur Park was made famous in the states by Donna Summer LONG ago, actually a catchy song, but then I always did wonder why she was singing about a cake….tail end of the Disco era (late 70’s-early 80’s)…

Would’nt miss it…will make it or will die trying to get there…just cancelled other plans with Andy in Beds for a month later to make it to this (luckily his plans changed too) so I think I can swing this as my ‘vacation’….really looking forward to it, might have a couple of my brothers in tow, too….one just back from Iraq (as of today, as a matter of fact..)

Kinda like in WWII, when they took a helluva toll on carriers towards the end with Kamikazes….but sheer weight of US numbers won out…

Any sign of five TBM Avengers anywhere? They went missing from the Bermuda Triangle just after the war….and a bunch of airliners….and a Martin Mariner rescue plane…and the Cyclops, a US Navy ship…and….
Mark
I’m looking forward to seeing how this whole thing turns out…and the photos!

SOMETIMES, kids, it can work to advantage! If a bunch of folks hear about something like this through….oh, I dunno…say an AVIATION FORUM, they tend to rally and say “We don’t need this outsider’s help, we can do this ourselves!” and everyone flocks to support it….such may be the case here!
we’ll see…

Someone tell Paul Allen we have the wreck of LB-30 AL557 right here in Colorado, being stored here by the Whittington Bros. for future restoration./…maybe he’d be interested…
Mark
Ah, my old friend Gordon Page’s company….we used that military Baron as a camera ship once to chase Sentimental Journey to Cheyenne and get pics of her….based out of Jeffco airport in Denver, Page is the guy collecting a bunch of Messerschmitt wrecks for restoration!

Hell, waited 3 years from the date of the announcement of the Corsair Gathering to the actual event…reckon I can wait a year and a half for this (they’re only Mustangs, after all….common as Cessnas…)
I’ll be there…
Mark
Yeah, they tested the Mustang off of carriers (called it the ‘SeaHorse’!) for possible use to escort the B-29’s to Japan but the need was’nt there because the US captured islands close enought to Japan to base P-51’s on and fly the missions from there…there is a great picture of a P-51 (painting) coming in for a carrier landing in the book ‘Fly Navy’ by Philip Kaplanon page….surprise surprise…51…of that book…the plane depicted in the pic is 44-14017 flown by Bob Elder, the painting a joint effort by Mike Machat and Craig Kodera….Don’t know about other Army fighters (would’nt the P-38 make an interesting Carrier fighter?)

Funny to look at some of the actors in this film and the varying levels of success they had….the five major stars, Clint Eastwood, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, Carroll O’Connor and Telly Savalas….but then there are the lesser actors who went on to bigger and better things, at least for a while….Stuart Margolin, who starred in the TV series ‘The Rockford Files’ as Angel…Harry Dean Stanton, who did several movies (Pretty in Pink, Escape from New York and others) and Jeff Morris, who is probably most known for being the owner of Bob’s Country Bunker in ‘The Blues Brothers’…..even later on, Clint and Donald Sutherland reunited on the space flick ‘Space Cowboys’ as astronauts alongside James Garner and Tommy Lee Jones, the first time they had worked together since ‘Kelly’s Heroes’….
Flew in her!! She is now ‘Shady Lady’ for the Evergreen museum up in Oregon, back in 1997 she was in Arizona for an airshow along with the CAF’s ‘Sentimental Journey’ and I managed to finagle a waist gun seat for a flight (a friend who was with me PASSED on flying in her, said his breakfast was’nt sitting too well with him)…we chased Journey around the pattern a few times and it was a great flight!

It WAS at the video store today, for $14.99 at Border’s, as well as another nice surprise, they have picked up Warbird Digest in the magazine racks….now if they’d just get some current issues of FlyPast…(their last issue still has the Hellcat on the cover)…
