Although I think that if the UK does opt for Rafales, then re-engining them with Ej200s should be considered, it is worth remebering what happened with the UK re engined phantoms with rolls royce spey engines, which had more thrust than j79s, but in the end made British phantoms slower 😎

Just buying Rafales for the FAA would allow the navy to keep its air wing and allow the RAF to concentrate on Typhoons and Tornado GR.4s. I believe this would be better than having a joint JSF force, but thats just me.

Plus, the novelty factor of having Rafales and Typhoons is too much to miss, and perhaps Mr. Chirac could be convinced to buy a squadron or two of typhoons? :diablo: 😀 😀 😀

I think this thread is a good idea but tittle is not very fortunate…can we choose it for “second rank aircraft industries or something similar”…It is a question of production not economical power.

For me, China or Sweden have relevant aerospace industries comparable to USA, Russia or France.
UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea can be considered in the second rank.

I have to disagree with some of your rankings on the following grounds:

The UK has the capacity to produce its own aircraft if it wanted to, the only barriers are political.

The UK has Rolls Royce, and BAe, two leading aerospace manufacturers.

South Korea produces its own first rate aircraft in the form of the T-50

France has Dassault as a true french company, but Airbus is not french, it is a european consortium, owned by French, German, Spanish and British interests, and is a world class firm in its own right.

Italy also has an excellent track record in designing and building aircraft (eg. AMX)

China may produce alot of aircraft, but by far the majority are licence built foreign designs.

Personally, I would love to see the Rafale with RN roundals on them. I think the F-35C with a complete tech transfer would be prefferable, but if not then Rafale is by far the best 2nd option for the UK.

I really like some of the Romanian efforts.

Their IAR Soim is an excellent trainer aircraft, their LanceR model MiG 21s are in my view the most capable MiG 21s in the world. They also did a good job on their licence production of the IAR 330 helos. The Romanian aviation industry is certainly a rising star.

If the GR 4. is getting AESA, then maybe a similar system will be adopted to the typhoon fleet? Here’s hoping.

I agree with you guys, in a situation such as this, then lives in the air must be sacrificed, as the passengers are probably doomed anyway.

I did have a thought about this though. How about redesigning new passenger planes so that the cockpit cannot be accessed via the cabin? I know it might be less safe, but it would be more secure. What do we think?
