I’ve been wondering about AIM-9X for that purpose. At the launch ranges we are discussing, there should be plenty of time for even an AWACS to get nose on enough to fire, and even the small warhead on Sidewinder is enough to get that job done.

    Matt

I don’t think the warhead is the main issue, as I understand it the main difficulties for matters like this are software related but I wouldn’t think that AIM-9X would have the range to take out incoming missiles safely.

Does anyone think the biger A330 would allow USAF to only take 1 tanker?

No, but ferrying missions are only a small part of general tanker duties. For the majority of missions tanker aircraft are used on their own.

    1. It seems that the manufacturers and the users of Eurofighter don’t think the capability of low speed, very high AoA performance and superagility are useful for air supermacy, therefore, they pay no attention for developing these techonology and skills for Eurofighter.

    2. It is said that Eurofighter is the most unstable fighter in the world, and although the No1 unstability makes Eurofighter extremely fast in changing its nose direction, it also causes a lot of difficulty to design Eurofighter’s FCS. According to the information I’ve gotten, even today, Eurofighter is still the NG fighter with most restrictive FCS limitations in low speed and high AoA conditions in the world, which makes Eurofighter hardly to be an amazing actor in Air-shows.

    3. Without the advantages in long range SA, speed, altitude, and super-sonic agility, Eurofighter is not so unique in low level and low speed dogfight. According to the declaration from the pilot of Italian AF, when dogfighting with an Eurofighter at low level and low speed, the 2nd hand F-16A/B MLU still has a good chance to hold its own.

On points 1 & 3, I think HMS and off boresight missiles could be considered relevant.

Could an AWACS aircraft be fitted with a CIWS such as Phalanx to shoot down incoming missiles?

I know it sounds crazy, but if it works on ships….

A few F-15s were withdrawn due to fatigue problems, but the majority are flying again; although they may have to be retired sooner than originally planned.

Posh and Becks are on Holiday in Florida. One day when they are out near the swamps they go into a shoe shop, where Victoria is rather taken with a nice pair of boots.
“What kind of boots are these?” she asks the shop assistant.

“They’re Alligator boots, Mrs Beckham,” he answers her. “They’re $1000 a pair”.

“What!?” Exclaims David, “We’re not getting ripped off like that! Come on Victoria we’re leaving!” And they storm out of the shop.

Much later, the shop assistant is driving home, and on the way his route passes the swamp. Something in the swamp catches his eye, so he stops the car. He is amazed to see Posh and Becks standing up to their waist in the swamp, a huge pile of a dozen dead Alligators on the bank next to them. He watches as an Alligator leaps from the water towards them.

Victoria calmly throws a net over the beast, then David leaps on its back and ties a rope around its mouth. They drag the animal to the bank, then hit it around the head with baseball bats a few times to kill it. Then David flips the animal over to look at its legs and says….

    ….

“B*11*cks, this one isn’t wearing any either!”

I suppose selecting the A330 for commonality with RAF tankers would be too simple a solution?

Heck, if the UK wants to outsource defense and become the 51st state, fine; at least then we get Raptors 😀

I’m sorry, but that is ridiculously flawed logic. If we went around thinking like that aviation would never have gotten very far.

After all, why replace the Sopwith Camel with something that only exists on a drawing board?

In case you haven’t noticed the USA is tettering on the edge of financial collapse…..fuel at record high…..mortgage foreclosure at record levels….housing market collapsing……many high wage union jobs gone or going…..the country over-run with illegal immigrants (who get free health care by the way)…..etc. etc. etc. If you think that protectionist Democrat politicians (that control the House and soon the Senate) funded by unions are going to stand by aimlessly and let what is widely seen as a French run consortium put more American workers out of work, well then I guess we just have to agree to disagree. BTW, the Chinese are funding U.S. debt, not the French!

If only Boeing hadn’t gotten greedy to the tune of 6-8 Billion extra dollars. Thank God McCain called them on it.

Are you referring to balance of payments with regard to defense or the overall economy? I believe the U.S. has a significant overall negative trade deficit with Europe. Now the U.S. is expected to sacrifice it’s one remaining leadership industry, Aerospace, in the name of fairness when the balance for the remainder is already negative??? Fairness for the French? Things won’t “even out” till the protectionists in Europe adopt a more market driven approach IMHO.

Hey, I’m not just making this stuff up. And yes, everyone else should be concerned…..I believe the old cliche is that when the U.S. catches a cold, everyone else catches pneumonia.

The US isn’t expected to sacrifice anything. If you choose to buy the European Tanker, fine; if you want to buy your own tanker, fine; but don’t run a competition between the two then decide to go for the losing bid because its more convienient.

Other people have problems too, not just the US, so don’t whinge to the rest of the world that we have to go out of our way to prop you up just because you are having to tighten your belt; we all are.

As for the trade deficit and the budget deficit, this is no fault of anyone but the US itself, and can only be solved by a fiscally responsible administration in the White House.

do you think Saddam never had any WMD? never mind the fact plenty have been found in iraq since the war eh…
Que the “b..b..b..but there was only a few sarin gas artillary shells, nothing to worry about! he never had none hurr hurr” http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/Iraq_WMD_Declassified.pdf now que the “omg fox cannot be trusted hurr durr hurr” oh and lets not forget he used them on his own population, be kind of funny if your leader used WMD on you and your family and were never bought to justice for it wouldnt it Satorian, wouldnt it?

The Halabja poison gas attack occurred in the period March 16–17, 1988, during the Iran-Iraq War. Chemical weapons (CW) were used by the Iraqi government forces in the Iraqi Kurdish town of Halabja, killing thousands of people, most of them civilians (3,200-5,000 dead on the spot and 7,000-10,000 injured[1]). Thousands more died of horrific complications, diseases, and birth defects in the years after the attack.[2] The incident, which Human Rights Watch (HRW) defined as an act of genocide, was as of 2008 the largest-scale chemical weapons attack directed against a civilian-populated area in history.

i’m guessing your of the opinion that Saddam should not have been held accountable for this and bought to justice.sad. Oh btw genocide too. He’d still be in power now if was up to the spineless anti war types.

Of course Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, we even have the reciepts to prove it!

Back to the topic at hand, assessing the practicalilties of an Israeli strike, given the potential number of bombs that would need to be employed, would a commando strike (I admit it would be almost certainly suicidal) have a higher chance of success of are Iranian troops present in high numbers around the facilities?
