I thought the same may be true as well flex, it might just be that.

Thanks as well for the info, Badger. The incident i heard of was apparently in the Nixon era, and i am pretty sure it was in Europe, so i don’t think there were any F-16s here at the time. In any case, the story was this:

A USAF installation in the UK, air force personnel listening in to Soviet communications, they used to make it a little game to pass the time, take bets on who could find a signal the fastest.

One of them finds a signal sent from a Soviet patrol aircraft (Bear i think), sending out a mayday. He calls for quiet and listens some more. He hears the Soviets saying “We’ve been hit by a lightning, we’ve been hit by a lightning! We can see American planes. Have sustained damage, will try to make it back.” The USAF man calls is supervisor, who listens to the translations and calls the base commander directly, who is rushed in at 3am in the morning.

The base commander listens in to the transmission himself and gets confirmation that US jets are in the supposed area, then calls the US for instructions. He relays the contents of the transmission to the person at the other end as the USAF guys read it out to him. When they’re finished, seconds afterwards alarms, sirens and flashing lights activate, basically all hell breaks loose.

But before long, they hear more information from the Soviet plane. It seems that they were hit by a bolt of lightning in a storm, not a USAF jet. The base commander quickly makes a few calls and the alert is stood down.

The next day they find out that when the commander had called the US, he had been speaking directly to the President, who had put all into action US plans for war, including conventional strikes against Warsaw pact targets in Europe. It looks like war was averted by mere minutes, and the public never knew a thing.

Its a good story, even if i have my doubt about authenticity.

To be fair, the Saudis would have to buy Typhoon from a political point of view to maintain credibility. Buying Rafale is as good as admitting that bribes took place, which would be a personal slur on the officials involved.

There is no problem with the aircraft itself, all the problems with the Saudis and the Austrians are political.

I don’t have a problem with any religion in itself, only when others wish to impose their belief on others. European nations are mostly secular for this reason, so that every citizen can be judged according to a commonly agreed law that is democratically decided, not just one religions laws.

If you want to know why many in Europe are worried by what they see of Islam, we must only remember the events after the danish cartoons of the prophet (pbuh).

Now, although not a Muslim, i acknowledge that the cartoons must have been highly offensive to Muslims, and were in poor taste. As i understand it Islam teaches tolerance and forgiveness, but did we see this? No, we saw violence and death threats ( although I am sure followers of other faiths would act little better). It is reasons such as this that present Islam to many in the west as a force that would impose itself on us, taking our freedom of speech whilst making no concessions in return. The Bishop of Rochester made his views on this clear.

In any case, if Islam comes to Europe, allows others to live their lives freely and not impose its own brand of justice, then European fears would be unfounded. But would this happen or would we get another state that lives by Islamic law and is fiercely intolerant of western ideology?

Flankers have the long unrefueled range that Brazil needs, but Russian equipment is different in its maintainence needs than western aircraft.

Plus, Rafale will have some weapons commonality with the M2K that the FAB already operates.

I would just wait to see which manufacturer offers the best value for money, and go with that.

    You mean it hasn’t arrived already? 😮 😮 😮

Leave the decison too much longer JB and I fear you might find yourself a long way down the exit queue :diablo:

    😀 😀
It’s funny cause it’s true! (laugh despairingly).

Did anyone else hear of the plans to make parents read their children a bedtime story? It may seem innocent at first, but if it could just be the first step on making children informers on their parents? Where will the injustice end? 😡

    You have a point, Kev.

So called ‘democracy’, its more like an elected dictatorship in this country. MPs are mostly spineless and will vote however they are told to vote, and none of the political parties care about the voters, only about how they can win our votes.
