Pete, I am not disagreeing with you, because I have been brought up that way. Even though I am contradicting what I am said above about respect be earned.
The point really that I am trying to make is: how do we fix the broken parts of society? Broken parts of society which will still exist even after the rioters are locked away. How do you get children to respect parents, who didn’t respect theirs? Parents who are not enforcing right or wrongs, or respecting others or the police. How do you change that mindset?
The answer lies somewhere between totalitarian rule and namby-pamby-PC-cuddliness.
And sometimes, I think some of them just need a kick up the arse…
Jay,
You’ve missed the point of my posts entirely, or perhaps I am not explaining clearly. I am talking about the environment in which these people have grown up, an environment which has given them warped senses of wrong or right. That is what needs to be changed, and that change needs to happen from both ends. Until that happens, you are only treating the symptoms (convicted rioters), not the underlying condition (broken communities).
I firmly believe that those involved in the rioting should have the book thrown at them, that I not disputing.

Welcome COOLMORE, feel free to come back and post some more. Especially of lovely DC3s!
It’s one of those planes that you stop at watch go by. Would look even better with some winglets. 😀
Respect is earned, not given.
A totalitarian rule is not earning respect, as some of you seem to be advocating.
I am not just talking about these people who have being caught/convicted in the rioting, but all the people that are vulnerable due to broken homes, broken communities, or lack of prospects.
Whatever the answer is, it will need to be worked at from both sides.
As fun as the ideas of Scottish Islands, Oil Rigs, Georgia, and indelible ink are, they are not the answer.
Even if you jail every person in rioting, you will still be left with broken and forgotten sections of society.
You just need to watch BBC’s “The Scheme”, it is depressing.

I don’t know, but in #15 you already mentioned thread drift.
Yet, we are still drifting…

Matt, with respect, don’t come out with the broken home crap…
Jim, you shouldn’t dismiss it quite so easily. We are in very different times. Increasingly more and more children are being brought up in single parent households. It is a problem.
You just need to walk down the street and you will see parents screaming at their children, and the child simply ignores them. The parent was likely rebellious, or cast outside a stable family life. The younger “parents” cannot cope, they cannot or will not deal with the problems.
The problem then becomes the parents don’t care, why should the child.
I bet your mother did care!

They ordered the B787s to replace the A330s, did they not?
What about the offenders who have come from a broken family, how do we deal with that? Families that have no discipline, no sense of right or wrong? Can schools instil that sense of discipline and morals?
As ever, there is no one thing that can be done. Whatever the solution is, it is likely that it will come in the form of many small changes. Although the handing of jail time is a message, it is not the answer. How does the government follow through with making important changes, changes that will help?

I do like their livery, but it just doesn’t sit right on the A380. The culprit in the large amount of dark blue on the nose, if the entire cheatline was curved like what their new B787s are like…

…then it would look much better.
