So far only managed three flights….
the first was in ’86 when popping into Wellesbourne after a day’s spotting at Birmingham.Asking if OK to have a look round,a local pilot asked if we wanted a flight…half-hour or so in Cessna 172,G-BMVJ(??).
Second was a jolly in a Jetranger at a local vintage transport rally at the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway Preservation Society. The pilot held the helo in the hover before nosing down and heading(seemingly vertical) for the ground before levelling off and heading back to the show-site(hopping over some power lines on the way).
Third and final(so far) flight was in Dakota,G-AMRA, at ‘Legends ’91…nothing more than a standard circuit, but rates as my favourite flight to date!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    well I’m fat,and I marshal at various light aircraft fly-ins so I guess,for me,both apply

I’m willing to “fess-up” as a number-cruncher,but like PaulC says there’s so much more to aviation than just that.
I,too, run an aviation enthusiasts group(also suitably heckled by Melvyn),provide material and produce the newsletter for the group, wave my arms at aircraft with Armwaver & co at Turweston,Bicester or wherever…and I’m on the organising committee for this year’s Abingdon Fayre Air & Country.
Any time left over is spent talking aviation on various forums or head-down in a pile of aviation magazines.
I live, breathe, sleep aviation in all it’s many forms and shapes

I like the idea of Sandown’s “Tea and Bacon Butty in 15 mins” pilot special.

I also like Sandown as their landing fee is very reasonable on pre-1945 aeroplanes!

AV8 serves cheesy chips. What else do you need.

Breakfasts at Popham stop at 10:30 but having run the clubhouse I can see why. With only about four feet of worktop available you cannot do breakfasts and main meals as there is just not space.

I cast an eye around Popham yesterday whilst deciding not to go flying, as the weather was not very nice, and there were few people there that would have gone flying. By taking out the bikers who would not have been interested and the odd person that I have taken before and who has just said “thanks” and walked off, there were only about three people in the place that would have been likely to have gone flying and two of those were PPLs who were also deciding not to fly as the weather was pooh.

There are, as has been pointed out, different types of spotters. Knowing OAG as I do I can confirm he falls into the “Spots but also does stuff, knows about aeroplanes, cares about aeroplanes and you can take he micky out of him without upsetting him” type of spotter. He is, sadly, a little big for me to take in the Rearwin but next time Patty is over Colin . . .

There are spotters that really only care about the reggy. I have been asked, no – told, to move out of the way of my own aeroplane that I was working on so that someone could get a photo. We get some people who just wander into the hanger but, it must be said, most actually ask. There are also some that you would not want to see hanging around outside a primary school and others that typify “care in the community” but most are OK.

I have to say I still don’t understand it. I used to make models when I was a kid (now I just stalk them . . ) and took photos and went to airshows, but never spotted, but it all got forgotten when I started flying as that is what it is all about. I’d much rather jump into my aeroplane and go somewhere than sit in a car and go to Duxford.

Very nicely worded Melv,cheers…..of course another reason for Popham not serving brekkies after 1030hrs could be there’s none left after I’ve eaten ’em all 😉
So long as Patty is happy, then OK,mate 🙂

As a spotter and/or enthusiast I have to say,Trinny, that was a very generous gesture on your part, and one that is not made too often,& I would guess that may have been the reason your offer was declined(although there are some around whose sole interest is the lettering on the side of the plane).
One other reason you could have had your offer declined was if the enthusiasts were on the large side, maybe they felt they were too big/heavy for your plane(don’t know what you fly,so only guessing??).At 6ft 4 and nearly 22st,that would certainly be my feeling if offered a flight, otherwise I would be there at the head of the queue
    happy landings
