fair shout matey
Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the last show of the year. Even if I had, I seldom get down to the tank bank for many of the reasons you outline.
I believe the WB-57 is due to depart Mildenhall (which it is currently sharing with a couple of F18s) this coming Saturday – 22nd October.
if I recall correctly, the USAF presence at the last Farnborough executed a spiffing display – over Blackbushe. I may be wrong but I think it might have been a B2 that staged all the way from the US and went back home only ever having been seen in the distance.

’twas a B52 operating all the way from Fairford
Belated birthday greetings,Melv
glad you had a good ‘un at Popham, only sorry I couldn’t make it
I understand that the aircraft below will shortly be leaving these shores.
The owner has decided to persue another project, one that involves skill with woodworking and a twin rating. (and no I dont mean something perverted with amputee sisters!)A very sad loss 🙁
Agreed MotF
will be sad to see the Rearwin go….
what’s the Melvster up to now then??????????
Great pics Jonathan!
I managed a few but was busy with the Rapide pleasure flying most of the time. Not an easy thing to try and do when you are not allowed to take off or land whilst they are racing!!
Tom.
Tom
was that you flying over Didcot Sunday evening in formation with the Prentice.
Seemed to orbit just to the S-E of the town before heading North…lovely sight in the fading daylight

briefly heard something on the local news late last week(sorry can’t remember exact day).
Said something about a Tiger Moth suffering a collapsed undercarriage at Kidlington, but thankfully no injuries to the two occupants. That’s all I know, but hope it helps

On behalf of the VAC,I’d like to thank all who came to Turweston this afternoon and made it a very successful day, among others I noticed Haireyplane,Melvin,Man-on-the- Fence,G-ASML,NeilP,Andrew-O as well as Armwaver and myself.
For the record over 200 aircraft had announced their intentions to visit, and although the numbers weren’t that high there were some real gems for us marshallers to play with..Melv’s Rearwin,HP’s Maggie and Ryan(& Robin),G-ASML’s Luton Minor,2xMessengers,Curtiss-Wright Travel Air,Druine Turbi and of course the Vimy, which for such a large aircraft was incredibly easy to push from the hard surface apron to the grass….
Thank you all(& thanks for making my arms ache like anything this evening)
Colin
Very nice, both shots very good, i’d love to see a Vimy fly. Anyone know what the plans for her are yet?
Rlangham

& Albert Ross
first time in yonks I’ve seen a piccie of the ol’ girl ,cheers
So far as I’m aware, there is only one Andover preserved in the UK…an ex-115 Sqn E3 at Cosford, though the Boscombe Down Museum do have the cockpit section of a CC2.There are also 3(??) C1s still flying at Boscombe Down.
I don’t think any ‘748s have been preserved in UK,though some are still flying in airline/parcels service.
As to an Andover-ski,the only thing I can think remotely similar that the Russians would have had at that time was the Ilyushin Il-14..albeit twin piston,as opposed to turboprop

I seem to recall reading many moons ago that Reg Halam (spelling?) who I think flew the maiden flight of Black 6 nearly came to grief when taking off from Benson on this first flight. I believe he hit a rut causing a heart stopping moment for those watching. I seem to recall he didn’t fly black 6 again and it was moved to Duxford for a better surface. Maybe someone knows whether this was true or not. Any way I’m very pleased the pilot is OK, I take my hats off to anyone who fly’s a 109, given that they are difficult to handle on the ground.
I have detected that a number of you who saw Red 7 fly earlier in the year are not surprised that it has come to a sad end. This is very disappointing given that we have a lot of experience about to help avoid these sorts of accidents. When will owners take on board the lessons of the past 30 years?????? I’m not making any particular statement here but rather expressing my huge disappointment at what happened.

was on spotter’s corner at Benson on that Sunday morning, and can tell you it did cause the heart to skip a beat or two. From what I remember,Black 6 did hit a rut,I think causing the propellor to just scrape the turf(though I may be incorrect on that point).
The drama continued when towards the end of the flight Black 6 was heard on the scanner talking to Benson. She was overhead Chalgrove preparing to return to Benson but could not lower the undercarriage.Needless to say this was sorted and she landed safely.
Wass always pleased to see her at an airshow,as,even when based at Duxford, she was always Benson’s warbird
hope this helps

Dave
this was the original HS748MF (Andover) prototype..sorry serial/registration escapes me,but I’m sure someone can dive in with it.
Anyway, after the film work she spent out her last days on the fire-dump at RAF Benson finally succumbing sometime around the late ’80s(???)…at this point Benson was the main RAF Andover base with Queen’s Flight CC2s and 115 Sqn radar calibration E3s as well as the RAF’s Andover Servicing Flight…a sad end for this particular aircraft, but at least she served to help save others had the need arisen
hope this helps
