Is there a reason why you’ve stuck the nose gear back on off centre?!

Heck, thats shocking surely a known problem like that should have been sorted by now.

It amazes me, as someone who in their job is involved with airfield habitat and some of the regs I do know that the grass areas of military airfields are to be as smooth and rut free as possible in the under/overshoots and I think 75ft each side.
I thought it was applied to all airfields but evidently not, but to carry on and leave this relatively easily fixable danger in situ with such valuable aircraft operating of it (not to mention at least 3 mishaps?) is just crazy.

And more significant as many more Lancaster crews would have spent time on it.

Getting back to the Herc, I’m surprised it’s a Hercules C.3 being preserved, it taking up more room, however more pleased aswel as they seem peculiarly British to me – and yes I do know that there are other stretched Lockheed C-130 versions!
Does anyone know if this airframe carries any particular history?

    XV202 arrived this morning.

Well I’ll be burgered, seems strange to hear of an airframe going to a museum when you have seen it operationally recently.
This is XV202 when she went tech at Saints in March. In fact it was the very same day that the crew got a very urgent call instructing them to abandon the aircraft there and to get back to base ASAP, as they were suddenly required for urgent ops – somewhere hot that isn’t a holiday location!

Can you name the ruler of Argentina during the Falklands?

    I can’t.

You have to appreciate that Galtieri, along with Admiral Anaya became household names in the UK, as did Haig & Weinberger.

I think some of the reasons given for the Falklands Conflict are a bit simplistic here, lets not forget the supurb political machinations and gains by Thatcher which ultimitaly were the driving force.

It was mentioned on Radio 2 this morning aswel, and although I wouldn’t be able to afford the experience anytime soon I didn’t think the price of the package was actually that bad.

It was considered, just abbreviated by the joys of using the Mrs’ iPad. Sorry!

I tried that for the first time yesterday with the Gannet thread… didn’t go very well:o

Agreed this is an interesting thread.
It would be good to hear more about Chox’s information that Chadwick wasn’t around at the begining of the 698 design period due to illness, it seems to fly in the face of populor writings on the subject, but also suggests that he might have been absent during Lincoln, Shackleton, & Tudor development periods.

Hi Tony, many thanks for joining the forum (not an easy task!) and putting across your impressions of the day.
It sounds like your father had a hugely interesting flying career, and hopefully we will learn a bit more about him here or in other threads (you mention the Hornet). It is fantastic to hear that you will be putting together a book on him aswel, and I really wish that I had more opportunity to have spoken to you on the day.
Thanks for your kind words about my photography, I guess I’m lucky with my position rather than my skills as such!
Some of the pics show you flying the aircraft I believe.

David informs me that his history of the Hornet Moth doesn’t show it being with the Radio & Radar unit, so either I have that wrong or the info is from somewhere else, I will check it out and correct if necessary.

Dave, thanks for your clarification on the strip name.

Does anyone here know what FEE or NI might mean?

From my experience this forum has a massive British bias, as WIX has an equivalent US bias, in both cases despite input from all over the world.

I thought we might have more considered input from you, I was questioning the generalised nationalistic inference that Brits seem to take the oppurtunity to knock American ideas by a large body of members here (which isn’t the cas as far as I can see), not the bias of the forum which is quite understandably heavily British – it being a British website and all.

You see, GrahamSimons… there is a large body of posters here that believe the Americans “borrowed” or stole everything from someone else… and anyone who suggests that the Americans had original ideas is treated with skepticism… and if you dare suggest a Brit got an idea from an American, you will be treated “less-than-gently”.

My personnal feeling is that we aren’t all that shallow or stupid and that the same level of challange and questioning would have occured if the two companies were based in the same country or completey different ones than the UK or US.

Graham, a slightest glance at Northrops’ history reveals he was in the wings business well before the German data was made available, and possibly before they were doing it.
I think we can be a bit too quick to sight all slightly different aerodynamic designs of 1930s-’50 as being of German origin or influence. Swept-wings, delta-wings, and flying-wings were being thought of by many different designers in different countries, I don’t doubt that there where various outside influences on some designs and details etc though.
Indeed we could equally ask the question, did the Hortons’ of Germany copy Northrop?
