A large number of film models were assembled for the production; for the more than 80 aircraft appearing in the film, static mock-ups and models were used as well as authentic aircraft of the period.[11] Lt. Col. Duncan Wilmore (ret.) acted as the United States Air Force liaison to the production, beginning his role as a technical consultant in 1980 when the pre-production planning had begun. The first draft of the script in 1980 had concentrated only on the Mercury 7 but as subsequent revisions developed the treatment into more of the original story that Wolfe had envisioned, the aircraft of late-1940s that would have been seen at Edwards AFB were required. The first group were mainly “set dressing” on the ramp while the Confederate Air Force (now renamed the Commemorative Air Force) B-29 was modified to act as the “mothership” to carry the Bell X-1 and X-1A rocket-powered record-breakers.[12]
Other “real” aircraft included the early jet fighters and trainers as well as current USAF and United States Navy examples. These flying aircraft and helicopters included:

A number of aircraft significant to the story had to be recreated. The first was an essentially static X-1 that had to at least roll and even realistically “belch flame” which was accomplished by a simulated rocket blast from the exhaust pipes.[11] A series of wooden mock-up X-1s were used to depict interior shots of the cockpit, the mating up of the X-1 to a modified B-29 fuselage and bomb bay and ultimately to recreate flight in a combination of model work and live-action photography. The “follow-up” X-1A was also an all-wooden model.[12]
The U.S. Navy’s Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket that Crossfield duelled with Yeager’s X-1 and X-1A was recreated from a modified Hawker Hunter jet fighter. The climactic flight of Yeager in a Lockheed NF-104A was originally to be made with a modified Lockheed F-104 Starfighter but ultimately, Wilmore made the decision that the production had to make do with a Luftwaffe F-104G, which lacks the rocket engine of the NF-104.[12]
Wooden mock-ups of the Mercury space capsules also realistically depicted the NASA spacecraft and were built from the original mold.[5]
For many of the flying sequences, scale models were produced by USFX Studios and filmed outdoors in natural sunlight against the sky. Even off-the-shelf plastic scale models were utilized for aerial scenes. The X-1, F-104 and B-29 models were built in large numbers as a number of the more than 40 scale models were destroyed in the process of filming.[14] The blending together of miniatures, full-scale mock-ups and actual aircraft was seamlessly integrated into the live-action footage. The addition of original newsreel footage was used sparingly but to effect to provide another layer of authenticity.’

Seems like main change from standard Halifax VI was the Hastings transport type extended wing and replacing the poor and restrictive bomb bay layout with something more practical.

The notes say that the centre plane is one piece (the complete wing is in 5 sections) and the diagram shows the centre plane having 12 ribs A – G left and right, they are not uniformally spaced & no dimensions are given.
As noted the intermediate & outer front spars have different sweep back, the centre has none. The rear spar is at 90 deg to the aircraft centre line throughout its span.

As Cees says in his last sentence the Hastings/Hermes wing is clearly adapted from the Halifax wing, if you literally cut, extend, and paste the Hali wing planform you get the Hastings wing complete with the modified tapers on the intermediate section.
Aerofoils are also the same, obviously the overall aspect ratio will be increased.
A schedule of Spare Parts or IPC for the Hastings will confirm the use of HP57 part numbers in the wing.
Would still like to know the individual wing section lengths as kindly offered by T/O:)

I always find the 1944 to say ’53 period to be one of the most fascinating in terms of foreseen or proposed aircraft tactics, deployment, requirements, and design, yet the era is generally not very well understood or at least published.
On the one hand there were the mass numbers of the conventionals (Lincolns, Spitefuls etc) ordered for quick and heavy deployment mainly for Tiger Force etc, while jets and swept wings were on drawing boards for eventual use. The massive orders of conventionals were cut in the immediate post-war period only for MAP and Super-Priority production to later take a hold as the Cold war took a footing.
I would have thought Lincolns and Lancs would have fared quite well if deployment was practical, bomb loads (particularly dimension wise) was their strong point, they were also rugged and straight forward enough for the ground servicing conditions, something I understand the complex B-29 suffered with initially in theatre.
As JDK touches on, I don’t know what they were thinking of with the outdated Windsor design?
I would like to know more about the HP.66 Hastings B.1 design though? Second time it has been mentioned here lately.

I wouldn’t have believed that some of the colours were applied by spray can before now!
Personally I’m convinced the chords are the same, the outer wing is just cut at the aileron line and not through the outboard flap. I wouldn’t call it completely different.
The drawings that I have provided above overlay on late Halifax and Hastings planform perfectly, even the wing tips seem to be the same shape.
The bit that differs is the increased span (and thus reduced taper) intermediate section, and minor changes such as fairings and leading edge intakes etc.
Cees you ask about the HP 57 numbers and you say you have the Hastings AP, that should contain the part numbers somewhere.

As an aside, some lengths of track that run close through runway undershoots had a safety cut out system that would cut the power to the tracks if an aircraft had cut the warning cable and thus reduce the chance of a train being able to carry on through the area.

I suppose some of this comes down to interpretation, the Hastings clearly uses the basic centre section and outer wing sections structures, complete with aerofoil sections, spar set up, flaps etc as the Halifax, however the intermediate section is stretched.
Personally I would say that the major structure of the latter wing is based on the earlier one but with detail differences, it isn’t the same wing.
I can’t help thinking your’e right G-ORDY and that the detailed info is out there, just needs to be dug out.
