Hindsight is of course a wonderful thing and this may sound like heresy to some people but because of TSR2’s cost and limited export potential I think it should have been cancelled much earlier and the money spent on an upgraded Buccaneer with many of the TSR2’s avionics.

Well said, and IMO the RAF gained by introducing the types into service that they had to because it was cancelled, Tornado, Jaguar, Buccaneer, and possibly Phantom (strike & recon role) – all great aircraft in their day and providing many years of service.
I just can’t imagine the TSR-2 providing useful service in the small wars that the others did.

As a Wild Weasel it could sure carry the equipment, but would it have been agile and deployable enough?
Also the RAF never seemed to have had a requirement for an EF type, I know it was mooted for the Tornado F.3, but that seems to have been it?

I guess the answer is that the panels (as illustrated above) are white, but so is the rest of the airframe.

Dialectric panels are a very light grey, but in comparison with light aircraft grey a different shade, consisting more of a blueish hue.

I think the probe Inkworm might be referring to could actualy be the port tailplane – a trick of angles?!

I suspect that training didn’t extend to landing a flying boat on grass, where the spirit of self and crew preservation might have kicked in shortly after the elation of having made it safely down, and before turning the engines and systems off!
