I would suggest your irony filter is in need of an upgrade 😉
The subtlety of performing a ‘Spitfire’ search on here was entirely understood thanks Moggy, not withstanding the previous threads on MK805 aren’t findable by using the forum search facility and had to found by using Google;)
Just done likewise, looks like it came up in another thread about it being displayed at Southend, here http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=118292
Excellent work Dave, I can’t remember now, but did any of those St Athan AV-8Bs have sticks in?
Looks like a Jumo 211, going from the curvy crankcase sides, the tube down the side, and the mounts positioning.
I’m no WWII engine expert though, just that it looks just like the engine in my huge Airfix Stuka kit!
Indeed good Dr, I think the search thingy’s still up the shute!
BTW not posting as a ‘been here before’, just that the original threads are worth reading through, nice to be reminded of the project again anyhow!:)
Must be a slow news day for the Mail, Terry’s son / simplyspitfire posted about completion of his amazing Spitfire project here almost three years ago, http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1595175
There are other threads on it as well.
Edit, other threads on the project here, http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/search.php?searchid=4817793
Superb creation mind!
When the one wing is folded for maintenance, it requires the wing jury strut to be fitted, worth including in the diorama.
It’s worth noting that there are two museums at Davidstow Moor, the one mentioned above (http://www.cornwallatwarmuseum.co.uk/index.html) covers the wider remit of Cornwall at war as suggested in the title, the other one (Davidstow Moor RAF Memorial Museum http://www.davidstowmemorialmuseum.co.uk/ ) is more airfield itself dedicated.
For me though, and as Rob says, the airfield itself is the main attraction, I’ve never been to any other that has quite the same atmosphere as this place.
If you catch it on a sunny day you can see for miles across the moors (UK’s highest airfield elevation), if it’s foggy you really get the feeling of isolation and the danger that the based crews must have faced daily.
The airfield is very easily accessible as it is on open land on the moors, it looks like the first museum includes tours of it anyway.
Always a possibility. Once upon a time there was an ‘Aeroplane’ forum!
That’s an interesting comment, did Aeroplane have, or ever consider a forum?
Also, am I the only one that it doesn’t occur to them (or that it doesn’t matter) that this forum is magazine/publisher owned?
Superb work, both kits must require a certain amount of bravery before embarking on them!
Where would I go – hell on a handcart, my life would be empty and meaningless without this forum!
Like Tony, my other half wouldn’t miss it.
Seriously, I don’t bother with the other forums apart from AIX for my airfield fix.
Tony makes a good point though, sometimes I wonder how counter productive it can be sometimes, when time could be better spent tinkering, researching etc.
Disposals Services Authority
I succeeded once, but I suspect Graham is probably correct, they now really seem to deal only with established large contractors, each of which seem to specialise in different areas, ie Everretts aircraft, Withams vehicles.
However if you’re feeling lucky,

I suppose idealy it would be great to see XL629 housed in a building of some sort, but it sounds from Tonys post that it’s is being well looked after.
It’s one more version of a Lightning, and as much as us enthusiasts would like to see a trainer variant displayed as well, the RAFM cater to visitors that would rather see a greater spread of types. For instance there isn’t a Shackleton displayed within the main RAF Museums, the Valetta remains hidden away, is there even any RAF service Jaguar on display yet?
I dare say there are many inter-war types that need to be considered for representation.
I agree that twin stick variants of fighters get poor representation though, is there a Vampire T.11, Harrier T.4, standard Meteor T.7 on display or stored with the RAF Museum?
I’m certainly not being ‘head in the sand’ either, It’s just that this particlar airframe is very significant where it is, as a well established reminder of the work of flight test crews – to my mind far more valuable there than being lost within the RAFMs collection where most of the general public would’nt be that bothered about it being different to the other Lightnings.
Edit, I like Bruces idea, displaying a twin tub cockpit section near one of the single seaters.
I think there are greater priorities that the RAFM will need to consider.
I’m not sure how the type is viewed within US aviation in general, but it should be remembered that from the types’ point of view the US was a tremendous success, what with the early Riddle orders (later used by Capitol & Zantop etc) and the last Argosy in commercial service with Duncan.
Shame the first aircraft (no prototype as such) can’t be saved, but as said difficult to save them all.
