The term is generally taken to mean any aircraft type that was previously used in (any kind of) military service – (at least this is the common definition in the country that coined the phrase). So yes, a Chipmunk is as much a ‘warbird’ as a Mustang in that respect.

This is where the term shows its self up as being purely a subjective one.
I take ‘warbirds’ (and I loathe the term as a dreadfully populist, and slightly American, one) to mean fighter aircraft that have actually served in war or types easily idntified as such, ie Spitfires, P-40s, P-51s etc. Example the BBMF Lancaster being termed a warbird just seems wrong.
I certainly wouldn’t class a Chipmunk or most other post-war RAF types as a warbird, though I guess some will lump Meteors, Canberras, Harriers in that pigeon hole.

I don’t see any need for more warbird shows at all, kind of miss the days when there seemed to be more post-war combat types flying, or even the old ‘heavies’ shows that used to be at Coventry. Even the big service mixed shows seem to be in decline.

I really can’t see the point of such an excercise.
Surely the idea of a museum is to show original items or artefacts with some history or provenance to them.
I get that high quality replicas have their place, usually within the context of other original aircraft or displays within collections, but a whole museum with just FSMs, not for me.

This move was first whispered about at least 8 years ago, seems to be more positive now, from my Cornish spotter point of view it sounds good. I do wonder about the business side of the move (from both Airbase & county council stance), as on the face of it doesn’t make much financial or logistical sense, can only think there’s a very good tax incentive involved, which is all very well until the council suddenly come calling for their business rates when times are better.

BSG, some Pembrokes were ordered and entered service as C(PR).1s and served in the reconnaissance role with 81 sqn in the mid ’50s. As mentioned above 60 sqn used the type much later on from Germany, with at least one aircraft having PR capability. They were also specified with a secondary light bomber role.

PS, re the Nimrod info above, that would have actually been the best bit of news if it was to return to its ancestral home of RAF St Mawgan, would have been the most appropriate place to display one in England.

Why is it that those who are active volunteers ‘CONTRIBUTORS” feel that those who don’t volunteer have no right to voice an opinion on a line up at a show?…

…But please, can we get away from this mentality, that if you don’t take part, you cant comment.

I feel completely indifferent about Legands, just not my type of show or content (nothing against what must be imense organisation and participaton of the show), however I absolutely have to agree with those lines.
Just because you aren’t contributing or part of the organisation doesn’t mean that you can’t reasonably air your views about a public event.
Saying stupid things like ‘what plane are you bringing’ is just meaningless.

Sorry to hear about the anti Auster comments about Waddo, variety is the spice of a good show, and all that.
