Well he does say longest serving ‘Growler’, but if he means still RAF owned it’s still a long way behind WL795 and WR960, both seen around 28 years service.

However as I said in the other thread, XF708 really should be kept at IWM or moved to another national collection, where presently no Shackleton is on display.

I taught it might be! Jetguy might have a seizure to think that any of the L-29s have got air under their wings yet!
Do you know which Hunter was there? Can’t imagine the weather was too nice!

The IWM tried to offer out the Shackleton until they where told in no uncertain terms IT IS NOT THEIRS to start with it is the longest serving growler on the books of the RAF.

Where on earth do you get your information?

Mk.3 XF708, entered RAF service Mar 59, delivered to Kemble Jan 72, just under 13 years servivce. to IWM Duxford

Mk.3 WR977, entered RAF service Sep 57, delivered to Finningley Nov 71, just over 14 years servivce.

MR/AEW.2 WL747, entered RAF service Mar 53, delivered to Pathos July 91, just over 38 years servivce.

Couldn’t the Varstity be a possible contender as a ground runner at somewher like Brunty?
Strange how props aren’t as populor for this as jets are.

Hope to God it does get saved, along with Sea Venom.

This was in response to what?

This I’m guessing, I’m certainly confused?

Alternative answer: Don Bullock and the Invader. Then a lot more people would still be alive.

Just had a call to say four black L-29s plus a Hunter were seen in the Exeter airport area early today. First flight for the Red Star Rebels then? 😀

    It’s not April the 1st is it:confused:

Thanks MkV, I know googling helps, but thought the learned board would be a better option.

Wow, a flying Ki-84, what happened to that?

Maintaining the green belt has appears to have been the main reason for the refusal.

I kind of know what you’re saying, but green belt, right next to the Country’s second biggest airport?!
Without checking again, I seem to remember that the museum had gone to some effort to make the area as ‘green’ as they could.
I can’t help but think the council have their own plans for that land, and it doesn’t involve old aeroplanes.

The sad thing is, is that the French AAAC.1 Toucan probably has as much (perhaps even more so?) imperial war history as the German Ju-52 original, especially given the French Indo-China and Algeria aspect.
be nice to see aircraft cherished, displayed, and annotated for what they really are.
Any guesses for who would take on the Toucan?

Very sad to see the types of aircraft that are up for disposal, just hoping that it isn’t bad news for the Varsity and Sea Venom etc, shows a woeful lack of regard for what were long serving training and FAA types.
Have to agree with the comment from Curlyboy about removing parts first as well.
I hope we don’t get to a position in the future where we look back and regard this as a dark day for IWM Duxford.

Also what is the latest on the talked of possibility of the Shackleton and Victor being disposed of?

I’ve been watching the BBMF fly over the Palace on the telly for years, and the BBC never get the coverage right! They often cut to the aircraft too late, shoot from a poor angle, cut to some reporter on board the Lanc but the signal will crack up, etc- it’s been the same for years. Can’t be easy though I guess.

Absolutely agree with what you say Mike, however panning on a slow formation which is coming at you in a steady and straight line isn’t that difficult, it seems they make it difficult for themselves by trying to zoom right in on the action, and subsequently getting jerky and very tight shots instead of getting nice wide shots of the whole formation. They have enough cameras there to get both of course.

Tim, do you have any recollections of what it was like to fly the Henley?

Hi Rich, I can’t really help, but which panels do you need making up? The pilots main panel seems to be in place, guessing you need engineers panel?

Good to hear that it will be on show at the weekend, and great work done in resurrecting the old girl.

Can see some tantalising Shackleton parts there as well, dare I ask where it is?
