Hi Alberto,
Good news, tks for the info.
The jets will be overhauled in Belgium. They will get the same upgrade which means the MLU version? used by Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and lately Portugal?
I hope that the current political situation could resolve rapidly and without problems and the F16s could come here for the Cruzex 2004.

m.ileduets,
Yes, the company associated with Sukhoi is AVIBRAS.

Glitter,
I’m talking about the replacement of the Mirage 2000C and 2000-5 (The air defense versions). I read that the Rafale will replace them first and after that the attack versions (the D and N)
I think that you are mentioning the entire fleet of Mirages including the D and N versions.
Regards,
m.ileduets,
The fact is that the FX has been delayed so many times and the companies had plenty of time to improve their proposals. If the FX had its decision in the planned year which was 2002, no doubt that the Mirage 2000-5 would be the winner. But, the ones for the Flanker and Gripen are more attractive than for the M2000. Also, the pilots prefer the Gripen and the Flanker and this you have to take in consideration.
No matter who will be the winner, I’m sure that Embraer will be involved in the project.

The delivery of the Rafale to the French AF has been postponed?
I guess that’s the reason to keep and upgrade the M2000C and M2000-5 for more years than expected (I know that the D and N versions will remain in service for more years than the Air Defense version).
Its a good and combat proven aircraft, but, it cannot matches the Flanker and Gripen and also, as I mentioned before, the aircraft that will be choose as the new FAB Fx will replace also the upgraded F-EM/F-5FM starting in 2020.
In this case the gripen has an advantage over the others despite the fact that, personnaly, I prefer the Flanker.

Adelphi,
Tks for the info, sounds interesting.

m.ileduets,
I read the interview, he is trying to sell it, that’s it. In thelast months there were many visits by members of the Swedish government in an intent to lobby the aircraft, the same were made by Russians and the French.
It is too much speculation, but, according to specialized press, as I mentioned before, it will be between the Gripen and Flanker.

Srbin,
You are correct, its the SU-35.
I prefer the SU-35, but, nothing has yet been decided, it is between the SU-35 and JAS-39 Gripen. Depends the offset proposal.
Regards,
That’s why the reason it is the favourite to be the new fighter in service with Brazilian AF.
๐
Phantom II,
Yes, I was a little kid but I remember very well, my grandfather took me there when they were in Rio.
Impressed me the size and noise, oohhh what a noise.
I cannot compare with the others because I never seen a demonstration with F16s, F18s, A4s ( the A4, I saw last year a demo from an A4 belonging to Brazilian Navy but just one airplane) and T38s.
The thunderbirds, with its F16s, came down here again in the 80’s but, unfortunately, I wasn’t there.
Regards,
Castor,
the situation will be decided until the end of this month.
The three favourites are the SU-35, Mirage 2000-5 and JAS-39 Gripen. The F-16 and Mig-29 have very few chances.
the Mig-29 is a totally outdated aircraft, problems to obtain spare parts, its performance has been questioned a lot.
The F-16 is a formidable airplane but the US government refuse to transfer technology and one of the prime reasons of this contest for the Brazilian government is the irrestrit transfer of technology.
Dassault associated with Embraer to market very agressively the Mirage 2000-5. The jet offered to Brazil has the latest avionics of the dash-5 and the Rafale and if wins, it will be built here in Brazil at Embraer’s new plant. There are some supporters here, but, personnaly I don’t think that it will be the winner. The french AF operates a few 2000-5 (around 37) is scheduled to retire from service in a near future to be replaced by Rafale. Dassault has promised fully transfer of technology
BAe/SAAB associated with VEM, which is a maintenance company owned by VARIG (Major Brazilian Airline) to market the jet here.
It is much appreciated by a group of pilots, and a lot of supporters. It is the only real fourth generation fighter in the contest. There is a big chance to win the contest as the Swedish government promised full access and transfer of technology.
I think that the advantage that Gripen has over the others is the fact that the new FX will replace also the upgraded F5 in year 2020 and the Gripen, with its advanced techonology, is better suited to equip FAB for long years if you consider techonology and cost.
The Russians associated with Avibrรกs, a local arms company. It is also very much appreciated by the pilots and also has a lot of supporters. I think is ideal if you consider the size of the country. It has a tremendous range, can carry a enormous load of missiles and also will give full access to its technology. According to the press and specialists is the favourite. Also an advantage for the Flanker is the recent agreement between Brazil and Russia to rebuilt Alcantara space station and to cooperate in future space launchings from there (transfer of technology).
Anyway, nothing has been decided yet and the chance to see a Gripen in full Brazilian marks (a very nice camo to say at least) is high.

m.ileduets,
The Super Hornet was offered in the very beginning but drop off the competition very quickly due to the tremendous cost involved.
I agree, but, the aircrafts that you have mentioned are trainers/LIFT jets. I think the F5 is a different category and also a 70’s technology, different concept, we cannot compare. The F5 was built as an affordable fighter to nations that are not wealthy enough to have modern fighters.

m.ileduets,
Regarding the Swiss F-18s, I fully agree with you. Right now, they are trying to sell the new Super Hornet, but, probably, will face, in near future, the same problem that happened with your AF.
I got your point, but, the Mirage and the Draken are different categories of fighters, they are larger than the F5 and has more powerful engines (Mach2+).
We use them for at least 30 years and they are simply loved by their pilots and a star at airshows down here. Its noise and shape are unforgettable.
Regards,
