Typhoon for Argentina, I donΒ΄t believe. I think, as soon as their economy become more stronger, they will get F16s or F18s. LetΒ΄s see.

The R99 used on a secret mission in Peru was the B model, used as a surveillance aircraft.
    The A is the Awacs.

Unfortunately, this is a common pratice for South American governants.

To Brazil, Dassault is offering 12 planes with a unit cost of US$ 70 million. ItΒ΄s a scandal.

The Typhoon? itΒ΄s impossible, but the SU-30, could be a possibility if the SU-35 wins here in Brazil.

Regarding the currency question, No, not even close.

“Even if we buy the Gripen/Mirage and face a SU-30MKI or Typhoon?”
Yes, they are very capable to fight with these jets and others. Is just a matter of how to fight.

And also the F15 that drove a Mig-29 into the ground. The pilot was Capt. Cesar Rodriguez who got another one, a Mig-23. Years later he got another Mig-29 in Kosovo.

Regarding the Hornet that went down in the beginning of the war, the pilot was LCDR Michael Scott Speicher from VFA-81 (still missing).
The two kills made by the Hornets from the same squadron were credited to LCDR Mark Fox and Lt Nick Mongillo. I don’t know the fate of Lt. Mongillo but Lcdr Fox later commanded the first Super Hornet squadron (VFA-122) and recently CVW-2 aboard, the now retired, USS Constellation.

    “Mirage 2000 Br = Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 + minor modifications (I think)”
Yes, some of the RAFALE new avionics will be part of the new aircraft. The avionics were not disclosed. Will have fully transfer of technology, all range of weapons currently used by the aircraft will be available to the Brazilian Version.

“For what Dassault would give to Embraer?
For political reasons? (I hope that won’t be the case here)”
Yes, there is a huge lobby for the Mirage 2000 to be the winner. Also there are too many speculations on this matter. The oficial report is about to be released, but, no doubt that on the political field the Mirage 2000 is by far the favourite.
The Gripen, in general, has an advantage of being the most advanced aircraft. The Flanker due to its enormous capability.

Regarding the actual currency situation. To the USD is USD 1 = R$ 2.92 (around). For the Euro is close to R$ 3.3.

Another thing that I also mentioned. The new aircraft will be in service for at least 30 years and because of that the Gripen is better suited for, even, despite the few chances, the F16.

Aside from the type of weapons that the Super Tucano can carry as Premier55 mentioned, the aircraft also has armoured cockpit, glass cockpit, HMS, NVG capable, chaffs and flares.

The aircraft (99 were ordered) was created to train future Brazilian fighter pilots and to operate as a light combat aircraft over the amazon region serving in three fighter squadrons along the border with Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. The aircraft will operate alongside the R99A Awacs and R99B surveillance aircrafts trying to intercept illegal airplanes carrying drugs to and from the mentioned countries as well as to bomb illegal airfields prepared, inside the jungle, by drug lords on the region. Also, will support the Brazilian Army against Colombian FARC rebels who regularly cross the border entering Brazilian territory (Brazilian AMXs already bombed the rebels at least once).

Currently, Brazilian fighters cannot shoot down any illegal airplane, just follow. There is a law to be voted at the Brazilian congress to allow FAB to shoot down illegal airplanes crossing the borders carrying drugs or illegal weapons.

    Good point you have mentioned.

There was also the incident between American AF F15s and Army Black Hawks (confused as Iraqi Hinds), very sad.

    m.ileduets,

Sorry if I had rude, it was not the intention.
I understand your point, The SU-35 is much more a deterrent than the other ones and fits perfectly for us if you consider the size of Brazil (can goes from south to the north with just one A2A refuelling or using extra fuel tanks…none) and also the enormous quantity of weapons that the jet can carry. Taking consideration of what you wrote, it will be a response to the F-16C/D Block 50/52 purchased by the Chileans and also from the Mig-29/SU-25 from Peru. Did you agree with me?

    m.ileduets,

Your point is very interesting but weird……I disagree.

No matter which aircraft will be the winner, all of them are very capable and can be more than a match, if well flown, to any aircraft in the world. And talking not only in SA, but elsewhere.
Remember, Brazil is a peaceful country. We do not want to be aggressive with anyone, but, we have the right to have the best equipment available to defend ourselves. Just in case….you know.

    Black cat,

The contest is about to be decided, it is between the SU-35, JAS-39 Gripen and M2000Br. The Rafale was offered in the beginning but was not considered.

    Black cat,

Rafale was offered in the beginning but discarted due to the costs.
The SU-35 is a strong contender together with the JAS-39 Gripen to equip FAB fighter squadrons.
