You should be in bed…but thanks! I found that site myself but was under the mistaken impression that both manufacturing sites will still running.
Got my e-mail to Irvin “Return to sender”, the telephone number is no longer valid and the yellow pages doesn’t list them any more just the Irvin -GQ site in Wales (which had closed for the day by the time I got their number).
Anyone able to fill me in on what happened to Irvin at Letchworth? Are they yet another historic company eaten up by some grand consortium?

No Roger Daltrey is lead singer Pete is guitarist/songwriter.
Okay, apologies for the error.
Just in case there’s any doubt, it’s neither: Roger Daltrey, Peter Townsend (of The Who); nor Peter Townsend the pilot!
Nope, no matter how much i enlarge it the serial is unreadable. I’ve tried tinkering around with the image in photoshop to no avail. The only readable part is the squadron code J-DM. The camo is different to the other mossie but it seems to have a similar/same tail logo (the white circlet with an animal in it). Is that significant?
I’ll see what I can do but I think it’s too blurred.
No it isn’t – I assume you meant the pilot rather than the lead singer of “The Who”? 😀
Hi Skypilot,
PF 607 was a B XVI,built by Percival Aircraft, Luton. It was part of a 195 BXI order & built between May 1944 & Dec. 1945. She initally served with 98 Sqd, then 14 Sqd & then back to 98 Sqd. PF 607 swung on landing, to avoid overshooting runway & the undercarriage collapsed 11th Aug. 1948. & that was it – off to the scrapman :<(
Cheers,
Neilly
Thanks Neilly! Another sad end to a wonderful aircraft. Any ideas on the other one in the background?
I should have said also, if anyone wants to copy these pics, please feel free to do so. I’d appreciate an appropriate credit if used for public material but other than that, go wild!
RadarArchive – I’ve sent you a PM Ian.

Lt Cdr Eric “Winkle” Brown was CO Aerodynamics Flight at RAE Farnborough until August 1949, and so that could be him in the front row.
Tis indeed the “Aero Flight” at Farnborough in 1949 and it is “Winkle” Brown, 5th from right, front row.
I guess I should have realised that the picture may well have appeared in his book.
He was not actually the CO though, that honour goes to the chap in the middle, a Group Captain whose brother gave me the picture. I happen to own his Group Captains cap and his later Air Vice-Marshall’s hat too.
Anyone now want to guess any of the others? As a clue there’s a very well known Battle of Britain pilot in amongst them.
I think it was in a book, if not ETPS then perhaps something to do with RAE Farnborough – but it’s all too vague now, my old brain’s getting tired!
RAE Farnborough – Yes!
I think I’ve seen this somewhere before – is it an ETPS photo and is that Jeffrey Quill at the far left of the 3rd row (in civvies with a natty striped tie)?
Hmmm! If you have seen it before I’d be grateful if you could recall where?
ETPS – nope.
Not Jeffrey Quill.
Thanks Ian. Another little mystery resolved! Although, according to Mr Jefford, 248 Sqdn disbanded in 1946 and was later reformed as 38 sqdn, which disbanded in 1947! Curiouser & curiouser!
I haven’t forgotten your Shetland list either – it’s a “work in progress”. I have a similar list for Ayrshire too if that’s of interest?
Quite superb! Thanks for sharing them and pass on the thanks to your wife’s family too!
I’ve added a link in your post on the RAF Commands forum to this thread, in case anyone there wants to view the photo. It may help …
Thanks Ian, you’re a gent.
Slightly off topic, you don’t have any material on the Isle of Man radar sites do you? (Scarlett, Bride, Niarbyl, Cregneash etc.)
From my research into 609 it struck me that many men of that generation were known by a totally different forename to their official one.
I know what you mean e.g. when is Jack really Jack or in fact John (never understood how that nickname works!). The frustrating part of this enquiry is that Ben Lee is obviously quite a distinctive guy.
As an aside, if Ben (assuming that is his correct name) was so badly burnt, where else might he have been treated other than east grinstead? Were there other specific burns units around? I assume there must have been.
Neilly, still learning here…
Which book is the Mosquito “bible” to which you refer?
