I knew I could count on you! Cheers. 😀
I would imagine that the wind has been out of limits for them. IIRC they’re limited to something like 10kts max x-wind or thereabouts.
“Aren’t you the bloke off Swap-shop?”
I shall be watching the programme very closely this evening. As I said, its a good job we have journalists like this, otherwise we the travelling public would never know.
Fine Danairboy, so how has it changed you life now that you know hmm? What are you now doing to ensure security is better? Probably the same as me, nothing.
I hate this type of reporting voyeurism with a passion. As I have said eleswhere, if there was genuine concern then the report could have been sent to the authorities instead of scare-mongering the public. I mean, shock horror, aircraft parked at airport, further shock, horror, security cleared staff able to access aircraft. Isn’t that what the passes are for? I’m not excusing those who don’t follow the procedures – I have enough horror stories I could relate but they would be of no benefit. Aviation is a fragile industry and I don’t feel this type of reporting helps anyone other than to sell papers and get viewers. If I see security issues/problems I report them to the authorities, not try to tell everyone and their dog and make a few quid out of it.
If you want my concerns as one who drives some of the planes from MAN, what about the lovely viewing park with raised hills – perfect for firing an RPG or lobbing a hand grenade from. Or the pub gardens at The Airport pub at the threshold for 24R? Personally i think there is a much greater risk from these areas, but I’m sure you wouldn’t like these to be closed off. The whole point of TERRORists is to cause chaos and fear. As has been shown, nothing can stop anyone determined enough to cause damage or destruction. All you can do is take reasonable steps. Who checks the checkers? The only fool-proof security would be to stop flying aircraft which is of course absurd.
I just wonder now how many people may be inspired by this expose’ to “try” the security for themselves? 😡
You forgot to mention the academic exams…..
The minimum licence required is a CPL (Commercial Pilot’s Licence) but most airlines want a minimum of a frozen ATPL (Air Transport Pilot’s Licence)(Higher hours and exam requirement, restricted privileges until 1500hrs experience reached, hence “frozen”). Expect to pay around £35,000-50,000 for a full-time zero previous experience course to start from scratch and get a frozen ATPL.
Nice to hear some of you are polite and pretend to pay attention even if you have seen it before. It used to bug the heck out of me when I was a cart tart doing the manual demo and having people talk all the way through it or holding up their broadsheets to ensure every knows how often they fly by their ignoring of the safety demo. Rest assured in an emergency, the same people are giving themselves neck strain listening to the revision demo. It is a legal requirement to ensure all pax are briefed. It may not look too macho doing it but i know noone would have cared when they need the info for real.
Now I’m up the front seats, I always acknowledge the fact that my pax have probably heard the demo many times, possibly even that morning but please refresh your memory and allow your fellow pax the same privilege. Just courtesy really. Who knows, one day you may need it for real?
Student to approach: Request rejoin at Flight Level 3000
Approach: Suggest you contact Houston Approach
As heard at a well-known flying college airfield.
Very apocryphal Concorde story:
LHR Tower to Concorde (Speedbird 1234): Reduce speed 180 kts
Speedbird 1234: Roger, reduce speed 180kts.
Brief interlude….
LHR Tower: Speedbird 1234, reduce speed 170kts.
Speedbird 1234: Roger speed 170kts.
Another brief interlude……
LHR Tower: Speedbird 1234, reduce speed 160kts.
Speedbird 1234: Roger, speed 160kts.
Speedbird 1234’s Captain (bit disgruntled) to tower: Don’t you know what speed we stall at?
LHR Tower: No, but I’m sure if you ask your First Officer, he’ll know.
Would love it to be true, but probably not.
Nice one SteveO!
Definitely Buccaneer then. Looks like an Artificial Horizon (type?) is the big one missing, but the second one I’m not so sure – it looks a bit like a clock?
ATPs… Dreadful things… Good riddance to them all. When I worked at British Midland, it was often said that ATP stood for “Alternative Transport Provided” or “Another Technical Problem”… They were also known as Skodas – remember this is back in the days when Skoda didn’t make very good cars!
Andy
We also said ATP represented their value too. (80p).
That said, as my first commercial type the ATP seemed like a rocket ship compared to a Seneca! Good weight, good handler in a cross-wind, very poor s/e performance – just enough power to get you to the crash site! Poor flight deck ergonomics but relatively roomy inside. Not sad to move on from it though!
Got them from junk collector.
Interesting about the Russian export angle.
The whole unit looks and feels very much British MOD though. The numbers etc. are typical of Brit kit. I’ve included a few more pics. It looks like it is helmet mounted too rather than vehicle mounted as suggested. The OD cloth is elasticated and there are a hook plate on the goggles and power pack as if to hook under the rim of a flying helmet.
Could it be army/infantry kit?
C’mon you little teases, I know someone out there knows the answer….
Bucc Society must know for sure.
Wot no guesses? 🙁
Someone must have a scooby?
Definitely not Russian – all markings are in English, not cryllic.
Are you sure they don’t require 3 or 6 volt batteries?
Errrm…. Don’t know!
I assumed it was just a standard C Cell as that is what fits exactly into the screw threaded chamber (Left side of the “box” part). Are there 3 & 6 volt batteries around that are C cell size?
BTW, I do it for real AND read about it in the magazines – I know, get a life etc.! At least that what my wife says! 😀
phew it must seem like the spanish inquisition 😮 🙂
NOBODY expects the Spanish inquisition…. 🙂
