Could it be from a split control surface, so that if one portion jams the other can still move?
I’d hoped the part numbers might have revealed more than they seem to have!
Book looks really good, just bought a copy from amazon
I will see if I can find more information on that particular aircraft, thanks
Thank-you all for your interesting responses. It’s remarkable how often parts are identified on here, but I guess even with a part where there are numbers available and the item has a clear mode of operation that is not always possible
I thought it might be part of an autopilot, but that is just a wild guess!

Bomb Accident at Marham
“”THE explosion of two 1,000-lb H.E. bombs on the ground caused damage to eleven parked Canberras at R.A.F. station Marham, Norfolk, on Monday last. The bombs, which were being taken to the aircraft in preparation for an operation in Exercise Morning Mist, rolled off trolleys being towed behind a tractor, and exploded immediately. None of the remaining eight bombs exploded, bur six of the Canberras were subsequently stated to be damaged beyond repair.
Chief Tech W. Bawley, the tractor driver, was critically injured, and subsequently died. Fortunately, there were no other serious casualties. As the bombs would presumably not have been fused before being towed to the aircraft, the cause of the accident is obscure. It may be recalled; however, that similar explosions did take place during World War II.

I was a Sergeant Atech at Binbrook in the early 80s and was trained to operate this kit. Noisy and exposed. Not a pleasant job!
Hi bazv
We missed each other by a year. I arrived in 73!
First five minutes show the apprentices at RAF Halton. Not much had changed by the time I spent three years there in the 70s
I was fixing a centre line pylon connecter on a Harrier GR3 on the Harrier OCU when somebody put the power on,. This led to an unexpected encounter with the aircraft and a sore head!
In 1973 I was a very recently – recruited Halton apprentice and I was at Duxford in uniform on that day. Although I served 12 years and ended up a Chf Tech working on Lightnings, I have very few photos from my service days.
If anybody has any photos showing the apprentices at Duxford that day, I’d be pleased to see them
The officer in the first photograph with hands on hips looks like Prince Bernhard
