All the Lightnings at Binbrook rotated between squadrons, storage and ASF for major /minor servicing, thus LTF would have a different F6 every couple of years or so. It was a simple job to change the gun tank for just fuel, although there were not many of the non – gun tanks about
Towards the end of my time I was a Chief in charge of one of the major teams. The aircraft had had parts robbed from them for other aircraft during their time in storage and were generally in a hacked – about state. I remember when one came in for the start of the servicing, one of my lads wanted to know if it was a decoy!!
As I remember LTF only had one mk6 on strength. It was fairly unique in that it did not have the gunpack fitted so had extra fuel.
We are relying on memory here!!
I am virtually certain they never had overwing tanks. They were a theoretical fit that none of the Lightnings at Binbrook used, except when they were at the very end of their life and BAe had some as high – speed targets.
The reasons for this were that they were bad for aircraft fatigue life and were also a total pain to fit. The holes in the wing where they fitted were good for an odd bit of light smuggling from Cyprus!
I can’t remember a just green aircraft they were either grey – green and towards the end various shades of grey. One interesting variation was on the underside where an oval was left metal exactly opposite / same shape as the canopy. The pilots said this confused the opposition as to which way up the aircraft was, as often the canopy glint was used as a cue.
In the early eighties I worked on the LTF. Happy days!
Oh, and reading your original message it does have a brownish area where it wasn’t fixed properly!
It is 7.2″ by 5.2.
No idea what type of paper
It is a gloss print. Its original owner was a press agency, Scherl Bilderdienst , Berlin SW68
Thanks chaps, most appreciated. I did try Google, but it didn’t do its usual magic for me.
I bought this print on Ebay from Germany and I have now received it. Translating the script on the back:
“Recently the British attempted to bomb Venice. Three enemy bombers were shot down by the italian air defence.
Our picture shows a British bomber in the shore waters of the venetian sea”
Dated 18 Jan 1941
So this all fits in nicely with the info you have provided
Thanks again
Ian
Bumping this to the top to hopefully get some advice from the knowledgeable people on this forum
Thanks in advance
Ian
Didn’t take long! Check out this link:

It will be interesting to watch how many of the items turn up on Ebay over the next few weeks!
Picked up from a search on Google News:
Two Portuguese soldiers died Sunday when their military plane crashed near the capital Lisbon, a military spokesman told Lusa news agency.
The aircraft, which had taken part in the conflicts that led to Portugal’s pullout in the 1970s from its colonies in Africa, was owned by the aviation museum.
It plunged for unknown reasons into a residential area near the train station of Algueirao but no one on the ground was hurt.
I was at the auction, and was equally surprised at the prices that a lot of the items made. Certainly there were a lot of disappointed punters who expected the catalogue estimates to be at least half – way realistic!
THANK – YOU & SOME OTHER PICS

Thanks for all your efforts – some real scholarship here! I thought you might be interested in these pictures which I do have the facts on

Does the large yellow band around the roundel give a clue on date?
Ian
Thanks for all this very interesting info. Further observations. The prop blabes are not bent sidewards and there is no obvious battle – damage. Maybe engine failure. The logo under the cockpit looks like a pointing finger. If you look at the german soldier leaning into the cockpit, you can see a small segment of the first code between his legs. Is that more likely to be K or D. If only he has stood a little further forward!
