On the factual side, I’d add any of Martin Middlebrook’s books, particularly “The Nuremberg Raid”. If you are interested in the bomber war, absolutely superb
I agree that opening this instrument is probably not a good idea!
If it has a metal case, it is probably held together with a solder joint at the front which you need special equipment to deal with
Thats not a name I remember, but, as I say it was all a long time ago!
A very worthy and interesting effort.
I was an ATC cadet in 70 -73 and my squadron did some amatuer wreckology. I have a dim memory that some bits from a Whitley were found – a substantial piece of undercarriage strut, I think. The squadron was in Goole, Yorkshire.
I have to say this was all a long time ago and I may be totally wrong here. I don’t even know if this particular ATC squadron still exists
Thank – you very much for your views, which do seem to be conclusive that this is an automobile item.
I suppose it isn’t beyond the bounds of possibility that some aircrew member took it along as his own personal timepiece
I very much appreciate the informed input which I receive on this forum!

Here is a picture of the back:

The only number on the case is 6464. I guess the stud on the back provided the mounting point.
The clock markings seem to be in the usual aircraft luminous paint.
I agree about the chrome bezel, this does not seem right, but would there be another application for an 8 day clock other than aircraft? (particularly one that turned up in Germany!)
Thanks for that, guys.
Does anybody have a picture of one “in – situ” ?
Cheers
Ian
Sounds extremely plausible – thank- you!

I was on the Harrier OCU in the late 70’s and saw this written up
Loud and persistent whine on rear cockpit intercom
Sgt Smith removed from rear cockpit!
Was a TBird of course!

Courtesy of a search on IMDB, I came up with “Mercy Mission – The rescue of flight 771”
