Are there any data plates or stencilled markings on it?
This looks like a good place to start:
Just found this link:
I find this website is excellent for checking sqn codes
http://www.stable.demon.co.uk/sqncodes/rafcode.htm
Well worth a look
Personally, I’d rather not see that happen.
My experience on other (non- aviation) boards where this has happened is that people float off to their specialist enclaves and the whole feel of the board suffers.
As the man said “If it aint broke, dont fix it!”
I bought it at an auction in my local town.
Do you know precisely what type and style of uniform you would be looking for? Armed with this sort of info and a bit of time you could probably find what you need on a “well- known internet auction site”
Cheers
Ian
PS A thing a bit of tarnish add character!
Thanks to both of you – much appreciated!
Guess we should mention John Nicholls. Being shot down was best career move he ever made!
TE Lawrence ( Lawrence of Arabia) joined up after WW1 as an airman under the pseudonym of “Shaw”. He was at RAF Uxbridge, and there are still a couple of picures of him in the officers mess.
Thank – you all for your help. It is very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to being there ina couple of weeks time.
Sorry Guys
The boat is there for one day only. 15 hours on the island or I’m swimming home!!!
I saw a programme recently where the guy who actually made up the names was interviewed ( sorry, can’t remember guys name or programme – old age setting in!)
He said the names were all fish: swordfish, goldfish and….jellyfish. When he told his boss the third name he was told (not unsurprisinhgly) to change it and the next word that came into his mind beginning with “J” was Juno!
There are quite a few books by this author on sale at abebooks.com. None match the exact title of the one you are looking for, but its probably worth a quick look!
I acquired the photo from Germany, but the uniform didn’t seem right for the German army or airforce, so Italian seems a good guess!
Mark 12 – excellent stuff, and I thought this was a difficult one!
Any idea on when / why this aircraft came to grief.
Is it possible to say what nation / armed service the guy in the photo belonged to?
Thanks
Ian
