Swiss cheese NZ Avenger
In 1993 I went with a buddy to visit his home town of Orewa, North Island(also the home of Sir Edmund Hillary,it said so on the sign). He took me to a local airshow that I think was at a field called Dairy flats? As I stumbled around the field I came upon an Avenger that appeared to be made of swiss cheese.I have never seen an airplane with so many holes.I have no idea of what was keeping it from collapsing into a pile.My guess at the time was it was terminal and would never be rebuilt.Am I correct? The healthy population Of Avengers seems to rule out resurrection. anyway. Tim
Still have 3 to go
So when can we expect the other 3 merlins to be humming along too?
Silly, silly man
The problem with Oz airshows is obvious. They’re in Oz! silly Aussie.
The Reno shack is about as much fun as the DC-7 that I saw Clay Lacy race in the Mojave unlimited race as a kid in 1970.OH MY GOD!
later
my dial up link is taking too long and i cant wait so i’ll send pics later.sorry
I’d pay a rather handsome amount just to see and hear a real Sabre roar! Wow! what a rush that would be! Tim
Well Whatdayaknow!
Mr.Hiscock,
congratulations! I just bought the May Aeroplane and saw the Picture and little note about the first flight and was gonna drop you a note.I bet after all of the time you have invested in this venture that this must really feel good.
Tim
no harm intended
Hello again my friends,
I was looking to stir things up a bit with my prior post on this thread but I wasnt looking to anger nor upset(well not too upset)anybody. If I have done so then I am sorry and will now go and stand in the corner till all cools down.I’ll behave from now on,I promise. P.S. Mr.Firebird, your pointing out how BMW bought Rover to thieve needed technology and then spit out the unwanted bits reminds me of an identical situation that killed another part of the British car industry. The players that time were a pathetic, obese, american auto company with the initials of G.M.The victim was a tiny, technology rich English concern named Lotus.Anybody remember them?Lets see,G.M. needed a modern aluminum (non push rod,non cast iron, non made in mexico)multi valve ,dohc,V-8 engine to finally place the corvette out of the 1970’s/60’s/50’s?and into the same decade more or less, that the European and Japanese Makers had been for many moons. The fact that Lotus were also world leaders in Active suspensions was just icing on the cake. They ate what they wanted(for way too little money)and spit out the bones.Leaving the carcass to be purchased by various interests and remaining Mr.Chapmans creation in name only.I too saw what the Elan should have been every time I saw a Mazda MX-5/Miata .end of thread 4 me.I’m thru preaching.(who would have ever imagined F-1 without Lotus!)
“Will there always be an England?”
First I read in my daily newspaper that MG/Rover,The last remaining British owned major car manufacturer is No More(bellyed up,Bought the farm, taking the big sleep, bankrupt) and now I read this!Whats up you guys? I’m wondering who really won that war.and now that theres a tunnel under the Channel, theres no more last line of defense left.I mourn the impending passing of a truely great empire and friend.Looks like the sun is truely setting. (how very awful, unjust and frightening) I may however,be wrong(what do I know?)
I sure hope that I am Wrong. Hail Brittania! God save the Queen!
Wheres Mr.Ed Maloney?
OK guys,I know that he’s a Yank and so he might not be as obvious to you on that side of the pond but on this side ,I feel that there is no one who compares to Mr. Ed Maloney ,the founder of the Planes of Fame air museum at Chino airport in Chino,California. He has singlehandedly saved a large number of aircraft that exist nowhere else in the world and others almost nowhere else.Such as The Northrup N-9M,The worlds only flying Northrup flying wing,He located and aquired the only 2 P-26’s in existence, one of which went to the U.S.airforce museum. The only 100% original flying A6m zero with its original Sakae radial engine. The largest collection of surviving japanese WWII aircraft in the world.Other rarities include the RyanFireball,BellP-59,Douglas Skystreak,Messerschmitt Me-262,He 162 and the list goes on and on and on.He collected most of these planes when most people considered them nothing but junk.He had to move them and stash them in numerous locations over the years as his financial situation worsened or improved, until he was able to locate them to Chino airport, where they are now appreciated for the priceless objects that they are.Mr. Maloney is one of my heros and I feel that the Warbird community owes him a big thank you for his determination and efforts . Tim.
If you would like to have the feel of your home Country I can always find you some nice place up here in Maine, remember we are looking to start a new Air Musuem and could use a retired like Gent to run the day to day operations.
Plus the Lobster and Moxie are a hell of lot cheaper here then they are in other parts of the States.
Cheers
RER
Mr.Setter,While I am sure that Maine is very pretty, and I have the highest respect for Mr.Rohr.Unless you enjoy freezing your BALLZOFF,avoid the East coast of the U.S.A..Come to sunny Southern California. It costs more to live here, but the advantages are many(like no snow)and Chino is 20 minutes away.also ignore the media reports of violence.I have lived here all of my life and havent been shot at once(I did have a DC-9 crash in my front yard once). My Kevlar T-shirt is still in its package and the batteries in the Tazer are dead.Good luck to you whereever you do finally wind up.Tim
Go Melvin,GO!
Mr Hiscock,
Go man,GO! all the best to you in your quest to get her airborne.Dont let anyone pressure into doing anything before you or the Rearwin are ready.I wish you luck and I look forward to reading about your success when you do finally fly her.
Good luck and God speed! Tim.
Do the Brits have sites protesting all of the innocents that were killed by the militarily useless German wonder weapons,The V-1 and the V-2?Howzabout we throw in The Blitz,Auschwitz,Belsen,Etc.Etc EtcBla,Bla Bla.The war was hell and no participant,NONE is innocent of willingly killing innocent civilians. Not Germany,Not Great Britain,Not the U.S.A.,Not Japan,Not Italy,NONE.some more guilty than others. It is wrong to second guess what was done by our Fathers,Grandfathers,Why?because we werent there.
WOW! Just look at all of that aluminum scrap!think of how many beer cans that could be turned into! Also,I agree that the last Photo looks alot like some pics that I have seen of Yamamoto’s wrecksite.Isnt the Yamamoto Betty located in New Guinea? Bouganville? If he was there then it could bethe same one.
