[QUOTE]I have even read, these two sides are competing each other heavily and Fencer crews are able to outmaneuver the Tomcats in some dogfight scenarios! Must be helluva fun down there…

!!!!!AN SU-24 OUTMANOUVERING AN F-14!!!! Were those Iranian Tomcat pilots eating their dinner in the cockpits or something!!! That’s even worse than an F-4E Phantom outmanouvering an F-15C Eagle!!

Never realised so many Tomcats produced!! You learn a little bit more ev’ry day!!

I think the Turks and the Greeks have the right idea. keeep the F-4 in service as a long range striker for as long as poss until the JSF comes on line. Replacing it with the F-15(E) or Tornado would have been nice but costly.

[QUOTE]If US goes ahead and bombs Iran (not that it should in my opinion), destroying the remaining Cats…the Phantom will outlive the Tomcat, who would have thought that 30 years ago.

An intersting and sobering thought there Milavia. Mind you, 5,100+ Phantoms built vs 500 – 600 Tomcats? Not suprising in this context.

A bit like the B-52 probably outliving the B-1, which was designed as a Buff replacement….!!!

I remember Richard Whitely when he presented “Calander” in this part of the UK. Part of my childhood memories in fact. Came as quite a shock to me too….

If ID cards are introduced (god forbid), I want a written constitution to stop any possible abuse of their power.

Here’s a thought. If I had a batch of Scuds, SS-20’s etc and wanted as many to potentetially get past an ABL, could I not just apply a shiny mirrored surface to my missiles to scatter the laser energy??

    Thoughts please….

Sorry, I would not have a clue, if I’m honest. As I’m sure you’ve done already, it may be best to contact the mfrs via Google??

Even then i’d have thought this was sensetive info…

[QUOTE]er, why does canada need a advanced fighter ? Russia is hardly going to invade from the north.

One has to remember that a country’s history, politics and defence position is shaped by its geogrpahy. Take the battle of Britain. Britains best defence was that it was an island so Nazi germany could not use standard blitzkrieg shock assults as they did with adjoining countries like Poland, France and Russia.

New Zealand like Britain is an island nation. However, its nearest big neighbour is Australia, 1200miles / 2000km away. Potential adversaries are even further away so NZ’s decicion to disband its fast jet force makes some sense.

Canada is a different ball game to NZ. Firstly, as is pointed out, Canada is an active Partner in NATO and member of the UN. Now will you ssend your ground forces abroad to participate in a war zone relying ONLY on freindly US, British, French, Italian, Spanish, German or Australian aircover????
Not only this, but will Canada thus allow only US Alaskan based F-15’s and F-1s to defend its airspace? Surely its the duty of every country, yes even the Iraqi’s during OIF to defend its own airspace, even with just a handfull of fighters????!!

For air-air work, esp close combat, it has to be the F-5E. For ground attack, the Mirage V.

I read many years ago in a British newspaper. that certain Nato naval vessels, incl RN friggates had lasers fitted in place of or in place of guns. These lasers were not designed to shoot down A/C, but rather to blind the pilot or crew. The lasers wewr removed apparantly as they were consided an inhumane weapons system.

Mind you, it was the Daily Mirror, so the facts may not be, lets say 100% accurrate…ahem!!!

USS, the last Ark Royal to have arrestor wires was pensioned of in 1978. The current ship to bear this name is based on the Invincible. These ships were originally ASW Sea King helo vessels. The US Marines showed that basing Harriers (AV-8A’s) on smaller vessels such as their assualt ships was possible. The RN followed suit.

The angled flight deck was a response to the older flush or straight deck carriers which provided only one lane for taking off and landing. If a pilot missed the wires, then hed most likley hit parked A/C or hit the superstructure of the ship. Look at old WWII footage to see Hellcats and Corsairs coming in for a bad landing and hitting other planes or the supersructure. the split in two or burst into flames…ouch!

The angled flight deck effectively split the carrier deck into two areas. The non angled bit could house parked planes, accommodate deck edge lifts and be used to lauanch craft from the front of the ship. The angled deck area could also launch aircraft. More importantly perhaps, as the landing strip was angled so many degrees AWAY from the superstructure and other A/C. A plane could thus land with much less danger of hitting anything if the pilot missed the arrestor wires altogether.
