Interesting that the F-105 makes you want to be a naval aviator……considering what a naval F-105 would need to take off let alone land even from the USS Foresatal…..
Both the E and F versions were nuke capable. Free fall nukes though, no SRAM capability.
And its in Vietnam where the F-111 won it spurs. After a shakey start with the loss of six planes, the F-111 became the only tactical jet, with the exception of the A-6, able to operate in the sometimes foul tropical weather. It couls also, along with the A-6 operate fully at night. The N.Vietnamese nicknamed the F-111 “whispering death”.
Actually re-reading my reply what I should have said was that N.Vietnam takes over the South quickly in a lightning attack, despite U.S. aid. So, yes there would still have been a conflict of some kind….perhaps just not on the scale of the real ‘nam.
I’d call the FB-111 medium rather than light. Then again, in the stategic sense….
The FB-111 would have been a very difficult bomber to shoot down. It could fly very low and very fast. Equipped with up to 6 SRAM’s (Short Range Attack Missiles), SAC had a very potent penetrator ’til the B-1B came along.
Of course, one would have to assume a South Vietnam in 2000+ being invaded its northely neigbour. What would China and Russia do?
Here’s another scenario:
There was no war in the 1960’s. Vietnam took over the South, despite being equipped with U.S . weapons. By 1990, Vietnam has the 4th biggest economy in E.Asia after Japan, Taiwan and China. Massive trade links with the U.S. Therefore, risk of war in the 1990’s – 2000 lessened.
Probably means M1.5 at SOME POINT during this 2 hr flight. If it was M1.5 all the way, that would be mighty impressive…..

Looting? Perhaps one term for it. However, looting is pehaps more akin to what the NAZI’s did when they raided various stately homes and museums throughout Europe and lifted hundreds of valuable works of art. Works of art are valuable, more so than an obselete fighter jet as at least one can sell a painting and use the cash raised.
Who wants a clapped out Mig 25 or Mirage F-1???? Esp afer being buried in the sand for several weeks.
You guys….are you not being too harsh???
The Mig 29 and Typhoon have plenty in common:
They both have 2 engines
They are both supersonic
They are very loud esp at airshows
They are both very agile i.e. can both do the “loop de loop”.
They both have wings and a pointy nose
errr….
If this is the case then “blimey”!!!
Mig, did you sy you did not like the F-86 and Mig 15? (aplogies if otherwise). If this is the case, why do you like the J-29? Do you feel it is more graceful? Has more character?
F-117’s to Israel sounds a bit like a “semi” proposal to sell Israel surplus F-111’s to Israel I read about in AFM many moons ago.
The idea was rejected as it was felt that with its strategic range, it would further upset the balnce of power in the Mid East. That said, the US provided the Israeli’s long range F-15I’s.
Of course, one can use the F-15I defensively, as a pure fighter if necessary. The F-117 is 99.9% offensive.
errrr…I asked the question, remember. It’s up to you to prove they can fly a such speeds.
