Australia has issued a request for information (RFI) for 29 airframes to replace the Australian Army existing Tiger attack helicopter.
Under the Land 4503 program, the first 12 new rotorcraft must achieve initial operating capability (IOC) by 2026.
According to the RFI Australia wants to purchase 29 “proven and mature, off-the-shelf” armed reconnaissance helicopters of which five will be used for training operations. Initial Operational Capability of twelve helicopters (one squadron) is expected by 2026, with full operational capability from 2028.

Australia selected the current fleet of 22 Eurcopter/Airbus Helicopter Tigers in 2001 and the final Tiger was delivered (eighteen were built with Eurocopter Australian at Brisbane) to the Australian Army ten years later. The helicopters are based at Oakey (Qld) with the Army Aviation Training Centre, School of Army Aviation and at Robertson Barracks-Darwin with two operational squadrons, 161 and 162 Reconnaissance Squadrons as part of the 1st Aviation Regiment. Due to all kind of issues, the helicopters became fully operational only by 2016 and first sea-borne ops by April 2019
Let’s hope they get something more reliable this time (that should be the easy part). Impressive also that the Tigers are to be phased out by earlier generation rotorcraft deemed more performant.

The pod is self-contained and carries a stabilized AESA radar that rotates around the pod’s center axis as well as geo-positioning and cooling systems. As such, it can work as a side-looking airborne radar (SLAR), taking high detailed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) maps of an area the Strike Eagle flies parallel too or even over, with near photo-like fidelity. In fact, it is supposedly so sensitive that it can detect roadside and semi-buried IEDs and possibly even groups of people on foot. It is also rumored to be able to generate ground-moving target indicator (GMTI) geolocation data on vehicles, such as trucks and armor, or vessels at sea.

Croatia should buy some of those Macron’s offer 4M$ Mirage F-1 and use everything they had on the 159 to pimp the venerable Mach2 wonder.
The problem that I see is that the 275hr are averaged among the rate of available airframe. Let’s say that 50% are available (what is somewhat what it is for real), each of those 275hr are spread among 2 Rafale. Hence you have to multiply 137.5hr per 97 airframe and use that to divide the MCO budget.

I think ppl should understand that system of systems implies on the shelf components made available to others. This is why (also) I wrote the above post. There won’t be a non-ITAR (real) 6th Gen fighter outside of Russia and China. Don’t crave for this. It’s only French salesmen porn.
Understanding this, you can see that India can have its own AMCA and still cooperate on Tempest (or with another contender).

I was reasoning on the basis of system of system. Imagine AIrbus and Dassault managing to complete with success their ambitious projects… Then they reach to the market already saturated with foreign AWAC ECM, JSTAR SIGINT etc.. system dominated by the US, UK/Italia and Sweden. What do they do to sell their system to a country already fielding NATO compatible or non-nato systems ? Send a notification letter asking them to modify their system in one week ?
I am sorry but if Sweden get on board Tempest, this might well be the swan song of the NGF (remember that French salesmen dream of a non-ITAR aircraft, hence non-NATO – there won’t be much other system around given the cost to develop and credibly sustain it).
Without any intends to open here the debate around the MAX, fact is that MCAS similar systems have been around since the swept wing… Stability augmentation is probably older than us all. It is unbelievable that a paid professional would have acted like they supposedly did. Sorry, my bad I should have wrote, IT’S F* SCARY!
It is obvious to me that lassitude and the push to take responsibility out of the hands of flight crew can led a 7k hr pilot to act with negligence. Last but not least the war on sub-system cost has also its share in this disaster (as an engineer I can’t believe that an AoA sensor can fed FCS with completely irrelevant data (imagine your car speedometer indicating Mach 1 and everybody telling you it’s perfectly normal), But at the end, it remains that Flight training is sick and you won’t simply bandage it and stop the tragic bleeding of passengers dying in an horrible agony. Drastic move are needed. IMOHO, it might even come with a a rapid increase of profit for a company like Boeing.
