    Well, Churchill and the RN did found their call answered by the British people at Dunkerque. It might be time for the sailing enthusiast to stack-up buoys and lace some spare microphones to their fishing lines 😉

    Although given the latest information, I will agree with you, there are still things that don’t add-up. 27 min after T.O ( from my mem), the passengers would have had their seatbelts untighten.
    There is also the breaking line of the rear portion of the fuselage displayed in the media. There is a fairly straight line following the frame geo but heavy presence of skin being tore-up outward. The structure of the deformation also points toward a vertical contact with the ground, just as I the section was released from moderate alt (the rear exit door is bulged out in its frame when there is trace of skin tear-up just nearby) There is no sign here of a frwd velocity component.
    Also, the right wing was found in one piece. I do not understand how this could be possible with an in-flight brake up at cruise speed.
    I am more on the opinion that the flight could have broken apart but at a much lower height. At best. I am alao thinking at a fcs departure. Something more in-line with the plane lost over the straight of Indonesia.
    That was also an A32x. (Aw8501).

    I think it may well be something to do with the stealth, ionized gas etc. The propulsion value would only be very small inside the atmosphere.

    It does both. The Elect voltage and power are dependant of the distance b/w state A & B. On a flying wing like the B2, this can be non-negligible. And then you have the transition g/l (moisture). 🙂

    But this has nothing to do in this thread. There is somewhere around here a thread dedicated to this subject.

    Engaging a target and tracking it are two different things. As an earlier pilot’s report suggested (US-UK exercise), the dynamics capabilities of the Typhoon allow it to start the engagement from a safe position behind the LO assets.
    So if we compare the cost of the Typhoon as seen from today to a full new program for a stealthy autonomous weapon carrier, the Typhoon still got the edge in term of capability and cost.
    It would be a large amount of funds lost to try to discard the fleet in favor of a new systems able to emulate it completely.

    Then in the deep strike world, it’s a different thing.

    Notice also the Jam&Escort cap as suggested by the pilot (wormhole….).

    BEA in France would be involved (plane manufactured by Airbus). Do we have any flightradar map?
    Sad news. Terrible times we are living.

    Two remarks:
    -1500 m/min is close to the maximum allowed descent rate by the autopilot (idem as Germanwing crash in SE of Fr).
    – The description of the crash zone suggests a ctrled attempt to crash-land the plane.

    The pilot reported some technical difficulties.

    Nice post. Very 1980’ish. I will enjoy it more watching some old video of Maradona.

    Regarding the ability of the Neuron to evolve inside a complex airspace, I am not convinced as you are. There is nothing in the tech displayed that point toward a modern/agile Sense and Avoid system. On the contrary.

    The first 5 lines below are probably correct, the rest is nonsense straight from the devil’s own a**.

    Ouuch. I just got struck by 20 long years. yes, electrostatic and propulsion is not that new (the anti-gravitics thingies that were at the basis the thesis of the book from which this scheme was extracted was obviously a nonsense, perhaps to the very knowledge of the author (!)).

    Fact is that the mysterious plane flying over texas (flying wing), seems to depict an usage of the tech. Such as can be guessed on the Ru side.

    But since, if there are any truth in this, this can be considered old tech, the LRSB might comes with even more astounding aero gadgets.

    What we can guess from the selection of Northrop (as opposed to Boeing) :
    – very large span with high deflection (the non-linear FEA thingies can be considered already old trick and cross platform/contractor)
    – Flying wing with evolving wing section (by physical means and active flows control- cancel a significant portion of induced drag and govern usage)
    – Electrostatic enhanced propulsion (smaller size but same range requirements)
    – Oblique wing attitude for supersonic cruise? (that’s my take, wld be cool)

    And, as rumored, a large application of photonic ctrl of the airplane signature and its sensors.

    What I didn’t like reading regarding the passenger’s horrible fate:

    – Nothing was done to explain why this flight was being targeted despite the 150 different crossing of this zone the same day on the same route. Despite the slight flight deviation, the second radar echo, the second flight nearby*, the NATO AWAC data**, nothing is done to explain if there are any links. And the rebel didn’t seem to have randomly targeted a plane.

    – The long explanation for the lack of consciousness of the passengers. The frigid outside temperature is recursively put forward when static temperature (-50C) and arrested temperature (-15C)are two different things. The report even detailing minutiously how the fuselage broke apart with the cockpit section cut out and falling apart, the first class section torned out with the top fuselage bending upward and the floor (with passengers) falling away downward; the center section was then exposed to the rushing airstream with passengers obviously having their seat belt untightened (cruise leg and flight deviation to avoid weather generated turbulences); the rear fuselage then broke out in a peeling fashion with the aft section separating in once before breaking apart. How could the passenger have freezed to death in such a scenario? Those in the first class mostly might have been ejected and, perhaps, submitted to the extreme cold before entering warmer layer of air, those in the rear cabin might have been flushed by the violent airstream on the rear bulkhead.

    Frankly I do not understand why they didn’t disclose more of their results, even in an edited fashion. This is a technical report. Facts are what bears some importance. And sadly, the despicable idea that passengers dies peacefully in a sudden flash of heat and lights stands firm. Again.

    To conclude, I would like to insist that the report constitutes an impressive sum of work written in pedagogical terms, accessible to many with a noble intention to tackle all the interrogation of this tragedy, from the small details to the organic cause leading to the disaster (no piping down of Intel***). A the ages of blatant propaganda from Russia and the sinister French Prosecutors devoid of any sensibility**** this stands out of the ordinary.

    An oustanding read.

    ** Reported as non-disclosed and bearing no informational content – if someone had tailed MH17, this would be apparent on the radar and converge with the MH17 deviation triggering some interest by the air defense.
    ***But as bloggers on an aviation forun that were discussing those shotdown after the 14th july, we can’t stand otherwise that being outraged by this.

    The strikes, around midnight, were the second on Islamic State in the city this month. Neither of Libya’s rival governments nor other warring factions immediately claimed responsibility.

    Also, in term of cyber security, as written before, it does not make much sense to re-use code from your most exposed assets.

    As there a high & low mix, there should be the same for fcs and avionics. It would seem more resilient hence credible that way.

    Also, in what I have read in the press, many commentator point the finger toward a now weakened Boeing. But the business of air defense in this century is… Space. Where Boeing is well positioned.

    What we begin to see (it was already there in fact) is the decrease in cost in airframe. For the first time in history, a strategic bomber will cost less than the one from the gen before (I am not even sure if the FB111 did achieve that over the 58).

    Given the Political agenda in the US and the 2017 timeline for LM regarding the 35, it would be tricky to win a momentum. My 2 cents.

    I noticed that also in DefenseNEws

    Once Northrop has completed the LRS-B design, divesting the business to another party might make sense to investors, according to analysts who spoke to Defense News on background to talk openly about the contract award.

    But does it make sense when having your design in service could be more seen as a profitable business (Large aircraft, upgrade/contracted service etc..)?

    Congrats to Northrop. Given the stakes in the competition and Northrop innovatives design, it should be a looker.

    Let’s hope now that there won’t be a protest, for once.
