Yes, MBDA’s “innovation” can be useful to protect a high value target, such as an head of state, on a duly selected topography. But did terrorist have switched their targets? And what happens when direct line of sight is lesser that 100m such as in the middle of a city? And what happens when you fire a Laser on a place surronded by a crowd such as the typical case when head of states are on the move ? Protect one and fry dozen ? Is that that the new motto?
The key in Urban area is obviously not the Laser.
So this product can be useful in some restricted scenario only. It’s not even useful to protect an airport given that the admissible range of engagement is to short.

I don’t know in what degree this will improves the chance of the Scorpion, but I have in mind that the co-variable of cost would be pushed in the line.
A lighter airframe like the C/D mights not need an upgrade of its engine to make for the comparison with the larger E/F. Regarding the radar, I had in mind that AESAs are scalable without the burden of a massive increase in cost.
Pardon my interruption, but I can’t share your opinion. Manpower cost for example seems to favor the low cost countries.
For example, the DoD expenses 155B$ in services as it was recently underlined in the press. Those are expenditures with a high percentage of Manpower that have hence a direct impact on the total cost. For the same services at the same level of knowledge and formation of their operator, the Chinese department of defense would paid less.
We know that the average salary is significantly less in that latter country that the former. This has an impact at all stage of the Industry pyramid (from low-end contractor to OEM). Hence your argument does not fits.
Another example (rather extreme and no ref to any of the above): during WWII, Nazi Germany was able to match the productivity of the fighter industry of the allies by resorting to enslaved manpower working until their own exhaustion and deaths. This had effectively nearly compensated for the shortage of manpower and lack of access to capital.
So Total expenditures matter only b/w peer countries: Fr Vs Uk or DoD Vs France for example. It hardly have a significance when wages are worlds apart.
Any comparative study sourced from the above doc would require a corrective coefficient.
Reading the names of the prospective customer, I fear that Saab will fall in the trap of marketing the different version of the Gripen as a High/Low mix b/w the C/D and the E/F.
That would be a mistake.
A C/D shld have everything the E/F is made that could fit in its airframe except for the extra fuel. Not all countries needs facilitated projection but request teeths and claws branding their defenses.

It makes sense: Littoral survey (shipping, fishing, traffics, migrants and SAR support).
The plane can also fulfill some of the Homeland security needs without waiting for the sense&avoid tech being fully released for a Eu UAS. And of course deployment abroad as a cheap sensor bird instead of flying on the clock more expensive platforms.
All this fuzz with Russia is nothing but persuading countries to spend more on defense. For the defense sector, peace is just unaffordable..
The present situation does not means that Russia targets Europe or the Russian want to play the balalaika in the street of Paris . It’s more all about putting pressure on Eu and force them to stand on a defensive posture with their citizen happy that peace stands seemingly for firm. Then Russian’s leaders will have the initiative to do whatever objectives the have in mind. With even the possibility to cut the corner or step on someone feet.
