    Moroccan F16 down (missing)

    A Moroccan F-16 warplane taking part in the Arab coalition fighting in Yemen went missing, stateed the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces.
    The pilot of a second jet in the same squadron could not see if the pilot had ejected from the jet, which was hit at 6pm local time, said the statement carried by the Moroccan state news agency MAP.
    MAP said an investigation is under way.

    A 5 day humanitarian truce has also started today after Houti fighters agreement

    i havnt seen it mentioned, but there is another very good reason to stay high: Range,
    a fighter takes a horrendous penalty in range by flying low

    Yes, exactly. For example, the FrAF’s FAS (Strategic forces) plan to drag their Tanker at low level with them. Not a very sustainable strategy in a tactical scenario (and something that not all tankers can do).

    The best way to increase your chance of survival is by being not shot at. Any Canard (Duck) Fighter shld know that.

    Low level penetration is a much more dangerous approach. Not only you are at every man’s gun range (Fr Jaguar during GWI with it’s pilot hosting an Iraki bullet in his helmet), but also you have to fly through all the hazard that could be thrown at you (structure, power lines, cables, bird, weather). Read the the old Checko from the F111 initial operation during the Vietnam war. it’s very informative regarding how small things can lead quickly to a very bad situation.

    The problem is that the Rafale low penetration capability is tailored around a short and very intensive war scenario (an all-out war against Warsaw Pact or a retaliation/preventive surprise strike). Sustainability and minimal footprint was not a part of the low level concept.

    You don’t see Rafale doing low level penetrations, routinely, during deployment (the airbase attack in South Libya desert come to my mind as a relative exception). So comparing the stealth capability of the F35 with that of a low level raid makes no senses. You’ll certainly will not trade one for another with the full assessment of your pilots in the long term.

    Notice that the above does not imply that the Raf is not a remarkable design, well rounded for the present engagements. I am only debunking the false assertion that a low level strike is the somewhat pendant à la mode de Paris of the Stealth aircraft.

    When addressing the issue of Range of the F35, don’t forget that it is a stealth airplane with an advanced signature management system. In order to reduce its IR signature, the aircraft have to keep a certain fraction of Fuel for cooling (Fuel = Heat sink). So the bring back fuel qty, when all system are on during the mission, can be significant.

    Of course, Fusion and Emcom modes alter this figure favorably but this is why we have that Recon mission figure, I guess. It could be the max range with all on-board system switched ON.

    Electronic Support Measures (ESM) are really ELINT techniques, but the term is used in the specific context of tactical warfare. ESM give the information needed for Electronic Attack (EA) such as jamming. EA is also called Electronic Counter-Measures. ESM provides information needed for Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM), such as understanding a spoofing or jamming mode so one can change one’s radar characteristics to avoid them.

    regarding the two way Meteor’s datalink Vs one way on the Raf, I would rather refrain myself to take any hasty conclusions from that. Cyber or Spectra might negate the needs for a download datalink. Even so if the radar provides the Datalink.

    An extract related to a recent discussion around CAPTOR and ESM:

    In terms of sensors, the CAPTOR-M radar currently mounted on the
    Eurofighter is widely recognised as one of the most powerful and precise
    of its kind. It can be used to detect and track targets at ranges of over
    100 nautical miles. However, AESA types outclass it in terms of multiple
    simultaneous target tracking, high resolution SAR mapping, low probability of
    hostile intercept and electronic-attack capabilities. Therefore, the CAPTOR-E
    AESA radar is being integrated into the platform as a priority agreed by all
    partner states in November 2014.7
    This new radar offers a very wide field of
    regard compared to standard fixed-plate arrays and will offer improvements
    in range, tracking resolution and fidelity, stealth, tactical options, electronic
    attack and ground mapping over the current CAPTOR-M. Since almost all
    modern combat aircraft carry radar warning receivers to detect hostile radar
    signals, passive operation is an important capability for the Eurofighter. To
    this end, and to provide a limited stealth-detection capability, the Eurofighter
    is equipped with a powerful IRST scanner called PIRATE, except in Luftwaffe
    service. This is entirely passive in operation, producing no emissions which
    could be detected by hostile threats. Due to the fact that PIRATE works by
    detecting the heat generated on an aircraft’s skin by air friction – rather
    than radar returns – it also offers significant potential capabilities against
    low-observable (LO) aircraft.8
    However, due to funding priorities and the fact
    that the Luftwaffe does not use it, it is only in the past two years that the
    sensor has started to move towards an operationally useful level of capability.
    Prior to this, shortages of spare parts and immature software – which was
    incapable of dealing with the sheer number of false positives inherently
    generated by such a sensitive sensor – hampered its operational use. Since
    PIRATE operates in the infrared (IR) region, it must be used in conjunction with
    other sensors to allow kinetic engagements of targets substantially BVR using
    missiles such as the AMRAAM and Meteor that use radar to track targets.9
    Italy has made some progress with PIRATE/CAPTOR sensor fusion, but this
    is still a work in progress. The UK’s version of CAPTOR-E (Radar 2 Extended
    Assessment Phase) is being developed to take advantage of some of this work
    and build on it to incorporate inputs from PIRATE and the DASS much more
    than the current sensor suite centred on CAPTOR-M.10 BVR armament is the
    AIM-120C AMRAAM radar-guided missile and this will soon be boosted by the
    much longer-ranged Meteor with full two-way datalink allowing midcourse
    guidance updates. The two-way datalink (not available for the Rafale due
    to platform limitations) is crucial for realising the full performance of the
    missile, in particular for expanding the no-escape zone given the long flight
    time and potential for significant target course changes at long range.

    Notice that each partner nation are going their own way for the Avionics suite.

    Whilst already very capable in many respects, the aircraft has not yet received many upgrades which Eurofighter GmbH originally intended for mid-life introduction such as up-rated engines with thrust vectoring, advanced electronic attack capability and true sensor fusion, especially between the PIRATE infrared scan and track (IRST), the defensive aids sub-system
    (DASS) and radar.

    But don’t forget the following sentence:

    Currently, upgrades to the DASS in this area are scheduled for the universal P4E software block, which is due in service around 2020.

    Although the Typhoon prog has never out-marked itself as being reliable with the schedules, an in service date of 2020 is tommorrow. At that time Dassault’s customers will slowly begin to receive their aircraft (something like half number for Egypt and early delivery for Qatar) – .

    So if it it is true that the Raf stands for its ESM capabilities in regards of the Eu Canards, the slower production tempo tends to cancel that advantage (ECM and cyber are a highly dynamic competitive range) .

    No.
    Avionic suites were similar in early version (that say a lot about how good it was for its time). Commonality have then been reduced with new Blocks and upgrades.

    Regarding the SDB:

    Before reducing the quantity of explosive in their bomb, research were done to improve the composition of legacy explosive and improve their destructive potential by a factor of approximately two (can’t remember if it’s slightly less or above two). This means that your SDB have the same destructive potential of a twice heavier bomb at least. And when it comes to gliding and guided bomb, the total improvement in weight are more in the 300% range (smaller gliding/maneuvering surface). Being lighter with less body width, the bomb can glide farther and/or have a higher terminal speed while requiring less internal space on the plane (it is also more survivable).

    It’s not like SDB are a cheap man bomb. It’s an evolution from the legacy GPB and the bulky LGB kits.

    So an F35 with a load of SDB have the same potential than an overloaded Rafale with 4 AASM and twin LGB. It can also attack more different targets with an increased dissemination (higher number of bomb and higher glide range). With internal carriage, close to the main body axis, it is less affected by dissimilar configuration and can still operate at a full dynamic potential going from one target to another. So F35 will generate less sorties at an increased tempo (cruise in speed ) per tasking order.

    Then why there was no integration of the SDB on the Raf, is sadly something that stands as a rather mysterious episode of the saga.
