What’s more, the target won’t start turning instanteniously. By the time to realize it’s being fired upon,

No. If the intruder is closing on your Raf, logic dictates that in 99% of the time you are targeted with sensors locked on you. He will then see the Missile launch and have extra time to take action the time the missile stir toward him.

Also don’t forget that the next block of the AIM9x will have a much greater range (merging with that of a BVR missile).

They might face some unexpected structural problem with their design IMOHO. Or it might be that some radical changes will be implemented in pair with other programs.

This is the point where I burst out laughing. No, Switzerland doesn’t have the need of STOVL capabilities. As of costs, hu, just no.

In your country, You can’t hve remote operation offset from population centers without resorting to STOVL. Major pop centers are down the valleys where are also situated Military airfield…

STOVL allow you to move on the plateau (see my post earlier) and increase your resilience requiring less infra, less personnel and less aircraft to sustain a credible defense. It lessens also your ToT and Manpower during any Zulu alert.

Maybe you like laughing at the idea, but you have to look at the logistics burden associated with defensive and active air policing today. Add the topography of your country and let me know how it feels as a Taxpayer facing a quinquenal budget plan filled with realistic performance objectives.

Good luck. I hve paid more than my share myself 😉

But in the past, Swiss have already surprised us with picking the Hornet which was clearly the costlier option compared to Mirage 2000.. and IMHO, not necessarily the better suited one..

At the time, the 2K avionic suite was rather crude and that of the 18 was one of the most modern in the world. The two screen arrangement and HUD was spectacular for its time, as was the single button switching mode b/w A2A and A2G. So much that many “non-aligned” countries choose the heavier and slightly more costlier aircraft from Mc Donnell Douglas when F16 was the norm for NATO and Asia.

This is something that I have insisted on. In those countries, often, the choice of an aircraft have also something with what you get when looking for a new ride. New tech and pimped-up image have something to play. this is not written on a pejorative mode.

Regarding the focus on cost, don’t forget that switching from F5 to a new aircraft will induce a lot of extra cost (fully modern infrastructures are in place only to maintain the F18 – The Tiger being a much simplier plane to operate). Their AF will certainly have a look at the overall introduction costs as much as service life cost. This is why, as I have said earlier, a new evolutionary approach that find some synergy with the burden of peripheral constraint to maintain an AF in a modern small Eu country could alleviates the latter by resorting t STOVL /Hub and Spoke operations.

Additionally, the strong links b/w the AF and the USMC will be extended and revived helping to maintain a capability during the transition.

By proposing the most modern jet with a full suite of material (“automating” UAV/Maned switching capability on Helos – again as with the USMC), such a package could easily gain the battle of cost even in front of the Gripen E/F* (infra cost, manpower cost, integrated OP b/w reservist and professional, less nuisance for population, long term life cycle cost, Technology “transfer” and of course OP capabilities).

[…]sensor fusion in the F-22 is actually quite limited (everything is slaved to the radar, it’s a hierarchical architecture like in the Typhoon and Gripen, unlike the cooperative architectures found in the Rafale or the F-35).

Pardon me but IMOHO, Sensor fusion and hierarchical architecture doesn’t fit well in the same sentence. You might have to re-phrase it or provide more explanations.

    As a reminder:

    Regarding Mental health screening:

I think it will be deemed unconstitutional if ruled in court. For example We don’t screen our politican for mental health (shld we?) and Psychology is still not an explicative [explanatory] sciences. It would be hard to set a standard or draw a line clear enough, and not legally intrusive, to sustain such decisions out of the tinfoil hat mental state.

But then some Eu countries have now a legal standard world apart from a true democratic process. It might be possible that we’ll see such decision implemented only as an excuse for conveniences in order to help the industry to recover from the GW’s aftermath.

This would logically only aggravates the state of confusion (non-Cartesian process) and increases the tempo of error.

We have to remember that on-the field professionals deemed Mr Lubitz not fit for flying. This advice was then ruled-out by a non-specialist advice provided by a physician with no connection with Aero. If someone want to look and trim the possibility of another similar event*, that where they need to pin-point their attention.

*My opinion is that we still can’t ruled out any other scenario in the GW crash.

IMOHO Embraer have clearly anticipated the problem. By designing a plane that will be more economical only on the longest leg of the typical C130 operating range, the C390 target market are operators using their C130 away from the Big MAC legacy: a small, economical, in-theater Transport airplane (opposite to the hub and spoke strategy).
However It remains to be seen if the 390 has any short field/rough field/assault landing capabilities equal to the 130.

In that sense, I will rather see the 390 as an A400M/C195’s direct competitor. And I might not be the only one.

Last Training flight for Australian Pilot:

    Notice:
    – The recessed stair system
    – The amount of lift at T.O and Landing
    – The number of planes at departure (enough for some country to call it an elephant walk 😉 )
    – The relative fragility of the helmet’s lens and the amount of precautions taken in handling it.
    – The sleek lines of the bird

Impressive demo of the still remarkable performances of high AoA capabilities in the F16.

    Great shot. Thx for posting.

Not sure. It is said that they are replacing both of their fleet: F18 & F5

Could it be that the 6.3 bil EUR are related to something like “if all options are exercised”, that means incl. the options for the additional dozen planes?

It’s(sadly) a (bad) habit in Fr to include options in the end-price of a contract for the Media. But I don’t know it it applies here. We will have to wait for definitive answer on the 4th of May or via a direct Qatari source meanwhile. Until then it’s only speculations

    Deino,

Isn’t there any faceting work on the nose of the D (in a fashion similar to the J20 nose)? The PS job coudd have been there to alter the perceived shape (eng nacelle and nose from tip to Engine’s inlets).

Also the CFRP paneling on top of the wing structure remind me very much the transition from the 2K to the Rafale. It’s a huge breakthrough for China given the relative high-end precision work of the base Su27 (tolerances – see the Guy with the hand-held drilling tool in the middle of the assembly line).

Notice also the paneling of the LERX apex with the gun muzzle contoured including the protective panel. A bit weird, no ?

anyway it’s a huge achievement and I wonder if there is some similar programs on other platforms.
