    Poor guy. I hope is not a hunter because inspecting that way the integrity of the modules during maintenance will have render him blind in no time.

    Why don’t they fire up the radar and run some preset checks (factory settings) instead?

    Following on from the Mirage F1, the Alpha Jet and the Mirage 2000, the Rafale is set to extend the historic partnership between Qatar, France and Dassault Aviation.

    Anxiety, home sick, shy or bullied (we don’t know and PPL can be competitive when airlines grants are scares)… Nothing that point to a silent Mass-Murder killer with no known self-glorification. It only says that he had some problems and was taking medicine provided by untrained physicians (not ones dedicated to flight sciences).

    It still does not fit the Silent crazy Kamikaze frame.

    There are studies (British and American, by obvious reasons) on the open about the costs of operating aircrafts on main bases versus V/STOL operations on dispersed sites, this last option, by comparison, is a bit (quite) expensive (and more survivable if WWIII had hit the proverbial “fan”). The manpower (and multiple related problems of maintenance, housekeeping, logistic support, command and control, and security) needed to operate in dispersed sites its a bit daunting (an example, think on the archetypal problem of delivering fuel to the sqn´s, in a mainbase thats done by a pipe, on dispersed sites thats either by truck or helicopter).
    Offcourse that you can operate V/STOL aircrafts from a mainbase, but in that case, there´s no reason for paying a premium for that particular capability (and the F-35B unit cost is, well, on the “premium” side of things).
    And i would imagine that the Swiss tax payer is not inclined to pay premium´s for fighter jets.

    I understand your arguments but those doesn’t take in account two main variables:
    – the revolution in Maintenance (modular design/ Automatic diagnostic and Offset analysis/repair + preventive maintenance (when it works)).
    – The high cost of operating inside a deeply buried/NBC protected cavern. You need trained personnel, specific maintenance, expensive tooling and parts etc…

    Last but not least, operating deep in the valley where man can found the only place to lie an airstrip, aggravates the noise pollution. By switching to STOVL on the surrounding plateau, you decrease drastically the nuisance level for your taxpayer (main population center are in the valleys).

    Also, Switzerland is an old country with an extensive networks of roads and liaisons. The Cold War era has even disseminated a lot of dispersed shelter, artillery position and paved spots all over the country that could be re-used to sustain STOVL operation.

    In that vision, sustained OP would use hardened shelters only as depot and deep maintenance routing parts and fuel via automatic airlifted deliveries (Kamov style) and roads. You’ll then have minimal footprint at STOVL base, fast relocation capabilities to increase resiliance and the Stealth characteristic of the F35 will augment the resilience of the overall system by hiding the landing location during approach and transit.

    No. It’s a budget because you won’t need to sustain as much expensive war hardened airbase deep into the mountain with Billon $ needs in personnel, maintenance and consumable.

    You switch all that for a bunch of tents and a campfire 😉

    Point2:
    max Distance for interception can be assumed to be 200km (see a map of Switzerland). At Mach 2 (~2400km/h) it’s 1/12th of an hour = 5min
    Now , let’s say that it take you 2min to reach Mach 2 from break release, its’ then less than 3 min of Supersonic flight at max speed.

    2400kp/h during 3min represents a distance of 120 km (1/20th), nearly half the assumed distance for the interception.

    Now let’s say that the max speed is Mach 1.6= ~2000kph and that climb and accel times and distance are equal. The flight time at max speed represents now a distance of 100km.

    The slowest plane will be late by 20km or 1/100th of an hour what represents 36sec. This time laps can be easily compensated by an appropriate relocation and dispersion of airbase closest to the expected path of interception and at an higher alt.

    let’s assume for example that instead of being based in the valley at 400m alt, the STOL base it at 1200m alt. Time lost with Mountain ridge and traffic deconfliction can be canceled for a more direct and climb efficient route. The 30 sec can easily be cut in half or by the two third.

    Cost will be lower since you won’t need to maintain as much an expensive infrastructure for an equal survivability. Manpower will also be lower since providing services for and maintaining an airbase with hardened infrastructure require more personnel with a dedicated formation.

    You can then focus your defense needs in Manpower around a core of professionals sustained by reservists instead of having a large portion of them being professionalized. What ALIS and the trend of Modern airplane to be maintained only via racks and Module architecture will obviously help to achieve.

    Fantastic piloting skills. Great job from the crew. Note how the plane stay aligned with the runway until speed fall down to a low value.

    Now, all the experts will urge the ICAO to give back the controls to the pilots.

    Have we found here the single FrMan that does not comply with Ironie?

    The P2, as a revamped engine fails to attract all the attention it deserve due to the old M53. But to say that it’s a modern design with fuel efficient perf adapted to the tactical environment it is flown today, is something that I won’t have written either.

    This is why I did wrote the following line:

    I won’t be surprised if the IAF’s M2K pilots are the first converting to the PakFA.

    yes I was wondering the same last week but cldn’t found any dimensions regarding height of the cavern shelters.

    So looking at available height only, we would have to ruled out most aircraft equipped with a the single vertical tail. I don’t know if my memory stand right but I have in mind that the main competitor against the F18 at the time vowed to take in charge the modification of the tunnel.

    I never heard something similar in the first deal from any of the different competitor. So perhaps the Air force did take care of that. Otherwise that will make a strong point for the 35 (and the 18E/F) aside of the small Gripen.

    Regarding the supposedly A2A dedicated airforce, this absolutely not true for Switzerland. One of the main pilar of the Swiss AF doctrine is to provide Air support to every node of ground defense in the country (war of attrition as a deterrence). Credible Strike capabilities are fundamentals there.

    We have alrdy discussed extensively around all those point, but I think the 35B could be a winner for the AF helping to cut the overall cost of operating an Airforce simply by downsizing the foot print of its infrastructures without affecting any of its capabilities*. It could also help to keep nuisances away from the citizen, what could be the ultimate argument during a votation

    So much that the next Motto of the air force could be: Sleep Tight 😉

    *let’s be realistic, a Mach 2 intercept above Switzerland territory does not bought any more time than one at Mach 1.6 – Switzerland is not India

    Nine-year-old story. The important point is that every current fighter has a measure of sensor fusion, and that it can be achieved through federated architectures as well as through integrated ones. The F-22 and F-35 systems were integrated because they had to be integrated; the related tasks of EMCON and sensor fusion demanded computing power that (even in 1995) meant big processor banks that had to be shared because of practical space/weight/power/cooling limits. It’s easier now for each system to do more of its own processing. IIRC, even in 1995 I had to have a card in my PC to drive the printer via an effin big cable. Now we just send files.

    And (this is kind of EW and Radar 101) the radar only works with some of the EW, in a specific bandwidth.

    I think you fail to understand that translating a signal from analogic to numeric is not a reversible process. There is a threshold in quality. You are accustomed to this with mp3/CD player etc…

    Signal process have now to be so much refined that a lot of Operation have to be done with the original signal. This prevent migrating the signal from one Black box to another one. Hence the need of high speed physical connection, integrated process of the spectrum of sensor data etc…

    That it have to be via multiplexing or via a 3D signal, I of course don’t know; but here lies certainly one of the reason for a Multi-million lines program and teh way sensor are integrated.

    So your Rafale, your Gripen might have a dedicated boxed signal analysis device connected b/w them with dedicated signal processing software. But fact is that you already lost the sensitivity and hence the information. The only way is to increase the amount of data processed wit more powerful computer running exponentially faster. But then, you have to make the hypo that Fr hardware, Swede Hardware are way superior that their US counter part (and running at a cooler temperature).

    Up to you to draw the conclusion.
