Some suspect an in flight dislocation of the fuselage (Official source said an explosion but the way part’s edges are cut on the rare picture I have seen doesn’t seems to concur to that – I mean we would have expected dented sections with sharp edges in that case)
Given the reported position of the 2nd recorder, a high energy impact with the water seems more plausible and will explain why such a tiny portion of the aft fuselage was found still attached with the tail (structure collapse like a car in frontal crash as opposed to a fuselage sectioning)

No. It’s time for real-time tracking of Airline behavior via a direct access to plane’s data by a central organisation empowered to act directly and on time. I would even suggest a direct transfer of suspect variable to Interpol (cargo, respected delay at airport, parts ordered, equipage modification etc…).
Just like in other industry, Self regulation by airlines doesn’t work every time, everywhere and in every situation. As we are now all “Citizen of the airways”, it’s time we bring what works down here up-there, no ?

Why don’t you lay out for us what you think you know about this missile’s RCS? With a turbojet engine and a passive seeker there is no obvious reason this missile couldn’t be quite stealthy.
Even if it isn’t particularly stealthy the fact that such a proposal has been advanced and funded for development speaks to some of the concerns posters in this thread have articulated about the potential utility of a relatively slow and/or loitering missile. (At least in theory a turbojet or low-bypass turbofan powered missile could be supersonic.)
You know, if it has time (long range subsonic), instead of accelerating at Supersonic speed, it could simply fully deploy a wing set and climb very high. That kind of Missile can have a high aspect ratio wing more easily than a jet. Think about that. Remind that U2 climb ? The same here. Climb as high as possible given the launch condition (you don’t want to accelerate) then adopt a cruise/climb.
Just when it has reached and detects the engagement conditions, wing fold like a VG plane and the missile accelerates in a dive. Then at close range M2+ (?), the booster is lighted and there you go: separation of the wing/body+Tank and you have a very long range missile able to loiter with a terminal kinetic hit.
In fact, when you think about it, your idea is not that stupid.
Imagine an Anti-Awac mission. The long range guidance is via passive Signal detection and datalink, then it switch in AARM mode and then H2K. Somewhat more expensive than a Sidewinder but it who knows ?
The relatively outdated Mirage 2000C didn’t make the cut against the latest F-16/F-18. The French offered the then new but not yet flying Mirage 2000-5 later in the competition, but were rejected.
My opinion: the F-18C had the better radar (APG-73 vs RDI) and better missiles (AIM-120 vs Super 530). Better STOL performance is a bonus. The Hornet may not have the edge up high and fast, but the Swiss model with -402 engines and low drag pylons climbs way better than older Hornets. […]
Don’t forget the superior high Alpha handling that might have played a lot in the way Swiss intended flying their planes. Also, prior to the MLU on the 16, the 18 had the best available avionics in the west.
On that subject, Swiss AF really should have gone for the A-7G in 1972. The Corsair crushed the competition, but due to mentioned pressure from France trying to sell the inferior Milan, the gov. decided instead to buy neither and opted for 30 used Hunters instead. That effectively was the end for serious air to ground business in Switzerland. The Hunters were kept in the A-G role until 1994 but that was hardly state of the art…

The F-4F wasn’t a bad choice. Thanks to reduced weight and maneuvering slats, it was a good performer. With 2 sets of eyes and 4 Sidewinders plus gun certainly better than the F-104. The F-4 also was an excellent (interim) conventional fighter bomber, unlike the Starfighter. What else would have been available in the early 70s? The F-15 a few years later maybe. Tornado ADV wasn’t really ready until the Cold War was more or less over.
Let’s put things in contest. In the early 70’s, after Vietnam and the Yom Kippur war, choosing the F4 was a no-brainer (load, tech, speed, true multi-mission, sexiness…)
Last but not least, given the popularity of that thread, should we grants its author a prize for being already the Best in 2015 or is that a lack of proper hindsight?
Why should subsidizing of uncompetitive companies be of any concern to me ? I’m interested in affordable eqipment for our armed forces. Now we have those overly expansive crap equipment sitting on the tarmac, and no money left for continous upgrades and pilot training. German bureaucracy and EADS have proven over and over again they can’t handle project management. Oh, and I forgot the A400M. A mix of C17’s, C-27’s and MRTT’s would have been cheaper and delivered on schedule.
The recent EC 645 procurement is an example of how it can work, existing design with some minor modifications, one year between contract signature and first flight.
Besides, arms deals always include offsets. This would benefit competive industries instead of the failure that is EADS/Cassidian/Airbus military.

Another AIRASIA A320 engine fails just prior takeoff in Surabaya
Flight QZ7633 (registration PK-AZC), bound for Bandung, departed Juanda International Airport and had taxied about 3m before the Airbus A320’s engine died. There was an explosion, which spooked the 120 passengers on board.
A passenger, Yusuf Fitriadi, told Metro TV that a pilot told passengers waiting at the departure lounge the starter monitor had malfunctioned.
“The plane was ready and had moved when we suddenly heard a bang. The engine died and the plane moved backwards. We started panicking,” Yusuf told the TV station.
The flight departed about two hours later, although a number of passengers reportedly refused to board the flight.
I wonder if such incident can’t be related to the battery with a surge in the electrical system .We have discussed something similar early in the MH370 thread.
