    The material is changing to what it is supposed to be! Therefore there should not be a design change resulting from bringing the material in line with design expectations.

    Sry to insist Amiga500. I know that you are a competent individual but we are dealing here with hot structures with thousands of different parts. Predicting the life expediencies and behavior of such product is nearly impossible without many test being run. Even with multiphysics modeling

    Test are usually run and slight mod are made btw.

    Now, they have to start all over.

    Add to this situation that the material change might have been fraudulent and you have a difficult implementation of new variable at a time and location difficult to assess precisely.

    This is why this is a criminal investigation aswell I guess. 3 month is a short time to do all that. Frankly.

    Pratt has sued A&P Alloys Inc, a Massachusetts titanium supplier, for fraud and breach of contract after questions over the material led Pratt to briefly suspend engine deliveries.

    The great news is that they have nearly One hundred of “Test article” to move frwd at a fast pace. I am available 😉

    The design is not frozen once it get-tout of the design bureau. It is still evolving during test. If the material was not appropriate, then those life test has to be restarted from ground.

    No. For sure. Not a good time to be in P&W. But still better than the extreme cardiac stress expected from that supplier 😉

    As I have said before (but I don’t know in any manner if this is related), until we fight “criminality at work”, R&D and Mil programs are in great danger of collapsing under the size of it.

    The second part of that article remind me those guys blaming the poor girl just raped for her curves and short skirt.

    Notice also that the company website (the Ti provider) is closed. I checked it yesterday and it was already down.

    I don’t want to say too much with so few info but if material is not complying to the specs and this was consciously hidden in the quality ctrl chain, it might have been an hurdle to search for it and identify what was going wrong. Especially if you hadn’t a single clue at the beginning.

    So instead of claiming that he has unveil the tip of a new 35’gate, that journalist might better question himself in what giving 3 month to PW to search for the glitch was not a more sage solution than make a drama of it.

    Material fraud have always impaired the aero industry at critical time. Sadly.

    Since we have seen disrespectful journalist writing strange theories based on groundless accusation and still meeting the light of the international press, I feel like we should restart the discussion around what could have happened to help feed the press with hypothesis really based on facts.

    On this first one, I will restart the hypo around runaway batteries. See here

    When I first wrote about this one, I have to say that I wasn’t expecting full agreement with that theo since, Li Batteries are flying every day, every where in the world and carried often close to body contact.

    If we had to see a runaway case incapacitating passengers, this would have been already hapening and the industry would have taken the bull by the horns since long (Apple batteries comes into mind).

    Then I had a close look at the manifest. And here it comes.

    As we can see, there are 133 items of one sort and 67 of another. Weights of items are respectively 1990 kg and 463.

    If we make a simple division we see that elements weight are 14kg and 8kg (see manifest above- tag 1).

    This seems to be much to high for a normal Li-battery pack. And as was alrdy said, a battery for general consumer product will unlikely see a catastrophic thermal runway in a plane given that they are widely used product. The incident case could not have been restricted only to MH370.

    However, Li Batteries are not solely used in general consumer product. Given their performances and high voltage capacity they are sensitive product for the defense industry. Especially when it comes to be an alternate power source for diesel submarines silently making their way deep undersea or surface navies that needs increasingly discreet operating ship in coastal waters.

    If we look at some of the battery pack used in this industry, we can see that such batteries are build to be modular and packed in specific encasing device adapted in shape, control requirement and safety to their targeted usage. They generally comes with their adapted charger that have an according capacity and a compatible shape.

    In this example, I will use the products marketed by SAFT*, a Fr company working globally for a wide range of users (civil and military).

    This kind of batteries have safety operational procedure defined by their operator. Some are intended for air deployment (air freight). Some are not. Here is a memo from the US Navy. Great emphasis is made around thermal runway risk and hazardous gases emissions.

    On the Manifest, we can see (tag 2) that the dimensions and weight are fairly comparable (Total weigh 1990 divided by 58 packing unit equate 34kg) to the product of the Company. SAFT being a leader in its market, I have no doubt that similar dimensions are more or less the norm. Any serious study would have to assess this fact.

    So, to summarize, the general idea of this post is that a fairly large battery module designed to operate undersea or on the surface at pressure ranging from atmospheric (ground level) to sub sea level (high pressure) could have been the cause of a the thermal runaway with the pressure decreasing as the plane went-up and the pressure in the cargo-bay falling to a lower value that what the enclosure was designed to sustain in normal operation (see post from the 3rd of May):

    What we may conclude is that the crew and passengers might have been incapacitated by the toxic gazes (arsenic) or had to face a rapidly growing fire in the cargo bay with heavy smokes (plastics and carbon) and high temperature (lithium).

    If such a sensitive battery was transported in the cargo bay of an airliner, it would certainly have to be rendered non-identifiable to be carried without trouble from one country to another. Removing the specific encasing container and parting its elements could have been the method used by non qualified personnel.

    What such a device did in that plane under that hypothesis, is however beyond my rational reach tonight.

    Well, if you want other to know that you know what you shld not know… That’s the way you do it.

    And lest we forget there were a lot of early problems with the f-100 engine. That did not stop serial production of the F-15, 16. Keep the production rate up while solving this, every hiccup gives the opponents more time to work on slashing numbers and reinforcing their chicken little death spiral narrative.

    Yes. GE have been adamant that they master the new step in turbine design (material). It will be interesting to know if PW is as much affirmative in their communication (I don’t have any doubt of it but… who knows ?) or if there is some patent issue (but we wld have heard any sign of it since long 😉 )

    sorry, do not buy it, the high/low shock absorber chambers of the MLG have to be charged according to instructions, are you just saying that ground personal fcked up the preflight phase as well? Too much imagination. I`m sticking with pilot error bcs of shortened approach and TVC to assist.

    No. I believe that the stiffness of teh damper is adjustable in-flight. Look at the strut. The left one is completely compressed when the right wheel touch the ground. The system react just like the plane just rolled over a bump. The right strut adjust its compression to the minimum, pushing the left wing down the ground.

    if it was not adjustable, the right strut will have followed the compression of the left one.

    Discussing this event with some friends of mine, one was even mentioning the possibility of a hidden glitch inside the very complex Su-35 FBW,:love-struck: not a pilot error. Told him similar written here, shortened approach, higher landing speed, extreme movements with rudder and stabs above the rwy bcs of a sideslip, pilot fckd it up, but still there was something bugging us meaning the violent roll movement to the left when aircraft bouncing off the rwy. Due to your stubborness and pointing to the TVC, I looked those few pictures available again and voila.
    We completely forgot that the SDU-427 allows TVC assisted take-offs and landings as well, but assuming it is not usually recommended. Pilot forgot to turn it off or deliberately used it, but overestimated his flying skills.

    yes. I had at first the same idea. I suspected like you that the hot gases out-flowing from the nozzle might have destabilized the plane just before touch down. But this is wrong. Just like the TVC mandatory off during landing (see Berkut post that know much more than me abt the bird).

    The picture I posted show clearly that there was a “huge” asymmetry during touchdown + a residual slideslip that the TVC are in fact correcting at the very same moment. The first pick that you’ve linked on FlickR even confirms what I depicted with my pic. Even if the photo shoot started just after touchdown. Notice that the left leg is more compressed that its right counterpart.

    I then tried to understand why the rebound was so pronounced. It is obvious than before the wing tip touched the ground, the TVC can not be finger pointed. However, the fact that TVC were pointed upward just before landing, indicates that the TVC sensed that the speed was to low for the alpha required by the pilot and compensated to grant the pilot the possibility to correct the sink rate.

    Hence, in fact, the TVC seems to have acted positively even before this slight mishap.

    So, what could have been wrong ?

    As crudely shown above, the sink rate was slightly too high. The speed was too low. A residual slideslip was present upon touch down and, as the picture I posted earlier show, there was a residual bank angle.

    Nothing catastrophic in fact. many time, you can see all those little things during airshow.

    Hence… (Jericho trumpets snoring)…

    The landing setup (shock absorber or tires pressure) was not adapted to the runway. I don’t know at all if that was the first landing of this Su35 on that runway that day, but, as a rather wild guess, I will say that a more soft ground configuration might have been setup on the landing system.

    And I never heard before any mention about such system on the Su ….
