This is a really beautiful aircraft, however, rest of them turns to negative direction.

So nobody question the fact that for years, France for example, had to rely on expensive Heavy Cargo services (An-224 and others), spending an awful load of money on services provided by those “companies” ?
That the fleet of C-160 was maintained in service (and some gone trough expensive slep) despite the cost ?
That the A400 in-service introduction will be slow with stepped capabilities for years (no-full military at first)?
This has to be accounted for.
Of course F1s and 2000’s will go sooner.
My point was it looks bad when the primary operators cuts orders from 336 to 180 (plus maybe 50 in future to replace Mirage 2000) and then gets it’s pilots to chug around in a turboprop because Rafale is too expensive to fly.
In fact the question is why after less than a decade of use does France hve to admit tht the Raf is too expensive to fly (if so)?
Regarding the advanced trainer, the T-50 does not hve a french engine and the Haw is way too old to be credible (both of them are single engine – think about it in a long-long term).
I think some of the guys here are severely judging those in charge now that hve to play the FirefFighter at the end of an all out Party that had turn wrong.
Those that hve kept going or hve delayed by decades (!) those programs are the ones to blame.
It’s all about raising racing dogs
But perhaps this statement is only to get some room to maneuver around a revised budget.
Yes, French possession of C-17s would have made a difference in Mali, but –
– They did have the use of a couple of C-17s, from the UK & Canada. They were valuable, flying large loads (e.g. vehicles) direct to Bamako.
– According to AdlA officers, the A400M would have made a huge difference to the Mali deployment. They have stated that an A400M could fly direct from France to airfields they captured in Mali, carrying loads that they had to send by sea & road, or fly to Bamako in jet freighters & break down to shuttle to the forward bases using Transalls or C-130s. I can’t remember the figures given, but they were impressive.Remember that the A400M isn’t only designed for high fuel efficiency It can’t carry as much, as far, or as fast as a C-17, but it can carry a lot more, further, faster (closer to C-17 than C-130J cruise speed) than a C-130, & deliver it to runways you can’t get a C-17 into or out of. It’s pretty much designed for the sort of expeditionary warfare we just saw in Mali.
I think the future RAF fleet, with several C-17s & a larger number of A400M, will be an excellent mix. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few smaller aircraft as well, for small intra-theatre loads for which it would be a waste to use an A400M, but apart from that I can’t criticise it.
PS. France to Mali is inter-theatre. For intra-theatre, the C-17s were unsuitable, because most runways in Mali are too short & rough for them. The Transall is ideal for such work – and it’s what it was designed for. 80% (by weight) of the cargo of a C-130, about the same cargo box, in a lighter aircraft with half the number of engines – but sacrificing range & speed.
Thx for your contribution (and correcting my inter/intra theatre mispelling)
However we hve to put forward the capabilitiesVsPrices issue. What is the fly away cost of a fleet of A400 ( with limitted capabilities for now)?
How much wld be the supposed savings on fuel prices in a long term perspectives compare to a C17?
Failed? Could you expand on why you say it is failed? I this because it can not max loads great distances as envisioned early? The C-17 may not be a true strategic airlifter like the C-5, but C-17’s routinely take substantial loads tran-atlantic, from Europe ot Asia, etc- so is that not transcontinental? I think failed is a little extreme, perhaps “limited” is a better term?
You’re correct.
I thought one of the more obvious aspects of this plane is that its intended for high speed?
It’s more FB-23 than F-117 methinks
The swept wing are not there for speed but for stealth.
The time to help (if you believe in intervention) was many many months ago, at the outbreak of protests; at that point it was at least clear that Assad was crushing popular protests.
By now the conflict has become radicalized, and Civil War lines have been drawn.Syria is screwed for years. It’s very sad, and the blame is all around, though it all came down to Assad’s initial reaction.
+1
The no-fly zone is the best that can be done for the moment. It won’t be a piece of cake and won’t be a game changer also but it’s the right balance geo-strategicaly speaking.
Didn’t China has some talks with Russia recently for buyong Tu22m?. It will makes sense for the weapon delivey system and engines.
Price quoted is extracted from the recent IAF deal.
Capability hve to be assessed in parrallel (A400VsC17). You can’t just argue that it sustain or it is vital for the Eu industry as it is not. There is no strategical tech or ability in a medium sized mil airlifter (but perhaps the engines on a French point of view).
C17 is a (failed) transcontinental asset but still match the intra-theatre needs for Eu expeditionary requirment (imagine how much quicker (force build-up), cheaper and faster could hvr been the Mali intervention).
On the other side of the equation, A400 is a turboprop with high fuel efficiency in mind (at the time). That is one of the point wich shld be debated here and not some kind of dogmatic arguments.
Sry written from my cell-phone
Not really, just looks like a single seat fighter bomber als F-105.
Huge and… subsonic
But you know, the black model might only be an artistic impression made around a former project in the form of the yellow model.
What can be extracted form this photo is only that the Chineese AF are confident enough to build a large modern/long range version of the F117… Or simply want others to think around this idea. Any how, I don’t see any benefits afgainst the so called J-20 (no supersonic dash capability etc… etc…)
interesting thread.
here’s mine:
it’s not a F89 Scorpion as suggested by the name of the file. The left plane in the formation is an F84F (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_F-84F_Thunderstreak)
Beautiful shot. Thx for sharing!
Thanks for the MiG-35 pic Jo, imo i still think in addition to MAWS sensors that left pod has ECM or towed decoy gear in it. Besides, it seems to be faceted ( not sure if that has to do with aerodynamic only requirements or not though).
Faceted and under-belly coated (IMOHO)
Old news now confirmed. http://www.svd.se/naringsliv/branscher/industri-och-fordon/saabchefen-forbereder-forarlos-version-av-gripen_8250206.svd
Unmanned version is in the workings. It will be the same Gripen E but the upgrade will make it possible to use the jets without a pilot.
Cost wise it’s ridiculous.
I know that banana trees does exist but Gripen trees? Really? What kind of wonderland is Sweden?
They are not able to back-up there car industry but they gona use a 100m planes like we scratch matches?!
Gripen is far bigger and faster but not really a good choice since it isn’t a known place. T-50 would be a better option, smaller, lighter, medium top speed, stealthy, and cheaper.
Stealthy?
