    Syracuse 4A and 4B are designed to carry Ka- and X-band payloads, and to resist multiple threats including cyber attacks, jamming and high-altitude nuclear events. Both have a design life of 15 years.

    Jannin [Col. Laurent Jannin, the head of French satcom programs ] said many aspects of the planned third satellite are still being finalized, such as size and exact launch date, but that aviation will be a major focus.

    Syracuse 4A and 4B have spot beams that concentrate satellite signals over a limited geographic area. While that’s typically fine for relatively slow-moving ground forces that don’t need satellite communications until they reach the war zone, spot beams can be a problem for fast-moving military aircraft that can traverse hundreds or thousands of kilometers in the course of a mission.

    “We need a satellite with high capacity on wide zones,” he said.

    France has four military communications satellites: the two fully owned Syracuse 3A and 3B satellites, and the Sicral 2 and Athena-Fidus satellites that are shared with Italy. The satellites mainly cover Europe, the Middle East, Africa and large parts of Asia out to around Vietnam.

    Jannin said the planned third satellite’s coverage will stay mainly over existing coverage areas.

    France’s Joint Directorate for Infrastructure Networks and Information Systems recently added satellite capacity through Telespazio France, which announced Nov. 5 that it would supply capacity on GovSat-1, a satellite operated by Luxembourg and fleet operator SES, for French government entities by the end of 2018.

    CSO-1 separated from Fregat five minutes after its second burn concluded – about one hour and 44 seconds after liftoff.

    Today, the SatCom used on the Rafale is civilian. The F4 version will be the first to use the mil data liaison. Until we see the launch of the dedicated Fr satcom system (budgeted, dev’d), the tech I understand will rely on Leonardo mil satellites. So we should not expect much diff with the Typh regarding its performances.

    The program’s restructuring “incorporates solutions for technical challenges,” including for the “exhaust gas re-ingestion” problem, he said. The Navy has “not yet made a formal determination” of a new initial combat capability date, Kuntz said.

    The test program has achieved more than 1,200 flight hours, he said. But the program’s flight test pace and achievements were “less than projected” because technical problems were discovered “later than expected” or were not sufficiently resolved, he said.

    It refers to the early age of aviation where every flight was a stunt (see 1st post of the thread)

    A pilot with a stuntman background… A one trained to land every time his plane in the Hudson river, glide a 242 tones aircraft for hundred of miles or recover from a spin at night in the most severe thunderstorm…

    Let’s let the Engineer deal with the day to day routines of flight. Let’s grd operator manage the flight routes, the schedules, the administrative tasks. Let’s the airlines Manage the flow of passengers in front of the increase number of administrative and legal procedures. Let the Software deal with the expected, the attended, the known situations…

    And let the pilot be a flyer, unsophisticated, rough, Cocky if possible but the one that can handle the most serious, sever and unexpected situation. Yep , that one will certainly have to be alone in the “cockpit” for obvious economic reason (cost of training), but let’s bring back the Stuntman!

    Software will now deal with the daily routine of flight. Stratified ones will do even better (see earlier).
    When something will go wrong, it will potentially cascade into something catastrophic rapidly. It is then logically in the interest of the industry to see and recruit their pilots as a backup failure system that will react in an environment where the decision process has been compromised or did failed completely (unexpected case of failure, instruments failures, non-relevant checklist, communications unavailable…). The Pilot will have to react instantly and take decisive action right on the go. Pilots that master the core of their competencies only will have a chance of success: stick time, 3d awareness, crash procedure training, aerobatics basics (and understanding), flight time “by the pants” and obviously old fashioned navigation training will be at the forefront of what does constitute for modern airlines… an useful pilot.

    Probably one of the few time that someone will be successful in selling fuel to the Saudis or Emiratis in their own countries !

    It’s sad that your judgement was eclipsed by the sour odd-saying of some here that Tom is bad and anti-whatever. Shall I remind you that we are here on a free forum where analysis and compiled information to start a discussion is the core of our micro “society”. This is all about Keypub forum. So I am sad that an old member as you are will oddly try to throw that at my face pridely.

    The point of this thread is only to compile information we have on the subject of Gov Macron giveaway airframe and how oddly cheap are all those sales.

    To give some arguments at your point, please remind that the Mirage F-1 were said to be offered to Argentina at 20M$ per airframe not so long ago (I even think I can remember how you seemed then quite enthusiastic at this idea):

    The dispute has allowed the resurgence of a proposal from France to supply a squadron of Mirage F-1, at a unit cost of US$ 23 million, but fully equipped and five years of logistic support.

    For the H225, the French ALAT (the one force in France that uses most of the Puma) has a 33% availability today. One of the worst of its (long and prestigious) history. I am sure that a fresh influx of (said so) low used airframe would have been appreciated by the service. Last but not least, the fact that the Pumas have been over-used by both the Fr and British army should put the cost of any spare parts rather high.

    It’s the same thing with the Jags. The fact that only one nation is in need for such airframe should put their cost on the up-side. Everybody acquainted with market rules should understand this quite easily… Especially when this flows of available part will compete directly with Fr national industry (that have been contracted for this to the point of raising a controversy) or were to be sold at an unknown price.

    Regarding the M2K dual seat trainers are hard to get since not as many were built. This make them having a value, especially when AdlA will keep their Mirage longer that what was planned initially.

    Last but not least I perfectly understand the Soft power argument to promote the image of the French democracy around the world (PhilipG) but when you give away 120 airframe for more or less 90M$, it doesn’t makes any sense… Especially when payment for the priciest of them, let’s remember, 300M$ for the full fleet of just decommissioned modern airframe, is routed via a single Freelancer in Switzerland

    I should mention the fact that I have been advocating the idea of selling the F-1 to ATAC and selling some Jags for cheap to India to help them in managing their fleet well before the events. Oddly as it seems, this has even been discussed before here as it is, with you ,my dear Feydakin, on some case, opposing my arguments.
    I should probably look at how I could offer you a decent internet browser for Christmas

    The GBTS includes four aircrew training devices. There are two high-end devices: a weapons system trainer (WST) and an operational flight trainer (OFT), both front-seat positions featuring Boeing’s Constant Resolution Visual System (CRVS) display technology, but with differing fields of view—360 deg. horizontal for the WST and 300 deg. for the OFT.

    CRVS systems Boeing has fielded for F-22, F-15 and F-16 mission-training centers mostly use 4K resolution projectors, says Deidrick. For the WST and OFT destined for the T-X program, the company has upgraded to 8K e-shift projectors, based on pixel technology developed with Japan’s JVC. Through e-shift, a projector produces two images alternated at 120 Hz (120 times per sec.) to achieve 8K resolution—quadruple the number of pixels a 4K projector produces. The upgraded projectors meet the Air Force’s visual acuity requirement of 2.5 arc-min. per optical line pair, or about 20/25 vision.

    A unit training device has the same cockpit as the WST and OFT, but with lesser, “out-the-window” visual fidelity—just a forward flat screen display—and no dynamic motion seat. A part-task trainer consists of desktop displays and associated HOTAS controls.

    The IOS mimics the back-seat position, from where the instructor pilot can monitor and communicate with the student pilot, control training scenarios and fly the aircraft. It is a detached, desk-type station with multiple monitors, a device Boeing adapted from the station it developed for F-22 Raptor training.

    The seven devices Boeing will deliver in the program’s EMD phase are two WSTs, one OFT, one unit training device, one part-task trainer, one mission debrief system and one ground-support station, says Deidrick.

    F1 are specifically to be maintained via the Belgian network
    SE are furnished with spare parts and, as airframe have been in service in Argentina for decades, the knowledge basis will be in country.
    Jags are to be cannibalized for spares

    Pumas contract only have paid maintenance for 160m€ but with no details on which specific platforms (3 diiferent types – two are modern type to be manufactured for that contract). But regarding the Pumas it’s not like France is still the only place where to source H225 spare parts…

    Only Mirages 2000 seems to fit the bill. But then India has been operating M2K for decades and probably won’t need much more support from France for only a couple of extra airframe.

This is unheard until now. And once again, no call for tender etc… Nothing. Half of those aircraft were “sold” for the grand total of less than 83M€ (~90M$)!
