Similar situation than in Switzerland: ppl are opposed to public spending and even more to the amount you need to buy Fighter jets. Replace F-35 by Humvee and you’ll get the same result although I will admit that you’d get a nice set of rims with the money. 😉
More F-35 Fuel Tubes May Need to Be Replaced
“In addition to the previously identified failed tube, analysis has identified two additional fuel supply tubes that require inspection,” Joe DellaVedova, spokesman for the Defense Department’s F-35 program office, said in a statement. He declined to say how many planes will need to be inspected.

Because the Marine Corps’ F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing jets are subject to different stresses than the other models, only B models that have reached a certain number of flight hours will be grounded for inspections. F-35A conventional takeoff and landing aircraft and F-35C carrier takeoff and landing jets, however, will have tubes replaced as part of normal phased maintenance.

4. Tight budgets will crush weapons spending in the next decade. As I noted earlier this week in Forbes, a combination of rising inflation plus big budget deficits will bring an early end to the Trump defense buildup after 2020. By midway through the next decade, the federal government’s cost to carry its accumulated debt will likely exceed a trillion dollars annually. Meanwhile, entitlement outlays for baby boomers will be at a peak. So it is going to get a lot harder to acquire new weapons. The Air Force needs to buy the F-35s it requires now, before budget walls close in.
5. Unlike other game-changing weapons, F-35 is available today. The Air Force doesn’t just need new fighters, it needs new tankers, bombers, trainers and radar planes. Everything is worn out. What makes F-35 different from the other new weapons, though, is that it is in production and operational today. All the other planes are still in development. Because high-rate production of all the different aircraft the Air Force needs will be fiscally impossible by the time planes like the bomber complete testing, it is just common sense to speed deliveries of the one game-changer available today.
The most amazing thing about the F-35 is that it exists at all. The Clinton administration loaded up the plane with so many missions and requirements that it is nearly a miracle the program managed to reach serial production. Now that it has, though, the military needs to take advantage of the $100 billion that four presidents have invested in getting to this point. If the threat forecasts in the National Defense Strategy are valid, the day is not far off when it will be obvious the Air Force should have been buying the F-35A at twice the rate it currently contemplates.

So this is good but I hope Dassault will integrate the down fall in price in airframe design to re-scale their projected cost Vs weight. The next fighters will be bigger… at an equivalent acquisition and lower ownership cost. This is the rule that prevail today. Let’s hope that Dassault will not singular themselves again for the future.
And last but not least, the F-35 is immensely more maneuverable than the Rafale (50% more max AoA for example – that includes full rudder authority at that angle) while marginally slower on paper and undoubtedly faster on a mission . So if they can’t get their equations right today….
It’s small means then that you’ll probably need to buy the UCAS that goes with it…. And probably the AWAC too because that little nose is scary 😉
Let’s hope that Dassault plans for a demonstrator as a real first step.
Beauty has nothing to do with it when led start flying around… The M2K is beautiful and functional as a weapon. The Rafale is elegant and has its fair share of in-design limitations. Let’s hope that amateurish unhelpful narratives as above stay at bay – at least the time this thing is fully conceived. Then that they paint it in blue, pink or tactical black …who cares: Stormy shadow will be… “invisible”! 😉

But if some airbases are fitted with appropriately constructed hangars (remember that we are not talking of a routinely used compound that does have to sustain the day to day heavily regulated activity), then perhaps the impact that have this kind of incident could be statically reduced.
The plan anyway was to park everything in this hangar what led to the potentially high damages rate since it was not able to sustain the wind gust experienced. So the planning is not faulty and makes senses. But the material (hangar design) or the objectives set were probably not adequate with the task or deemed strategic enough to be fully understood . It can be also that plans were not up to date with the rise of occurrence, costs of potential losses, shortened alert time and magnitude of such events). Was there a failure? Certainly. The question is not who to blame but, since we have here a systemic failure, how it could have been prevented.
