The Mirage IV was drafted under UN command during the establishment of the No-Fly zone above Irak after the GWI and II. In 1997/98 and 2003, Mirages were tasked with photo reconnaissance with their pilot flying under diplomatic passport to avoid being accused of spying in case they were shot down. An unique attribute in the history of Aerial warfare 😉

smaller diameter doesn’t lead it to being tiny.

Add a third stream to the F-135: In order to fit inside an F-35, the core diameter has to be reduced by two time the depth of the added stream… Hence smaller. Having inherently more cooling air makes also the core able to run hotter, hence at a better efficiency rate to the benefit of its IR signature (mil. engines).

We have discussed this already but the indication that a three stream engine would have to have fit inside the F-35 with the same cross section of the F-135 with better SFC can only be interpreted as an engine having a… higher overall BPR. Geometrically the core will have to be smaller (Ø).

Ultimately, engine developers need to create low-cost options. Suder says that may present challenges to manufacturers because eliminating non-essential engineering while maintaining high reliability for expendable engines is not something the jet turbine industry is well set up to do. “I only need this thing to last for 20h, I don’t need 10,000h of life in it,” he says. “The tools aren’t sophisticated to really accurately predict only a few hours of life, so we actually overdesign everything.”

very good summary of a remarkable analysis. We have posted the acquisition announcement at the time.

Italy Navy, Air Force debate where to base F-35Bs

As the first Italian F-35B pilots begin training in the United States, a tug of war between the Italian Navy and Air Force over the aircraft means there is still no certainty about where Italy’s STOVL jets will be based, and who will have ultimate authority over them.

“These pilots will be back in Italy next year after training and we still don’t know where they are going,” said an Italian analyst knowledgeable of the debate in Italy.

It’s a beautiful airframe when seen through Italian craftsmanship. However the mockup in Paris has a larger wing chord that kills a bit the effect (over designed wing surface = drag). But on overall this was a nice “surprise”. Regarding Djcross remark , I am not sure that deleting verticals will be of any help regarding the level of stealth achievable by nations with no in-service experience of such. You have to start by something (as say the Russians). And TVC is among the targets 😉

Japan says to restart F-35 flights Thursday following April crash

    1 MIN READ
TOKYO, Aug 1 (Reuters) – Japan’s defence ministry said it would restart flights of the F-35 stealth fighter aircraft on Thursday for the first time since a crash in April, resulting from pilot disorientation.

The aircraft that crashed in April was less than a year old and the first F-35 assembled in Japan. (Reporting by Tim Kelly Writing by Chang-Ran Kim)

Agreement have been well beaten by Canada already. You won’t skin a cat by having Japan join-in. The influx of a dynamic industrial network, the size of their planned fleet and their state budget are not something that you’d see at every corner.

    Yes.
But mind that in the case of the F-35, there is a lot of early LRIP bird that are weighting on the availability stats for the worst. Something that was criticized by the service.
Notice also that as the simpler to maintain A-10 and huge B-52 have fairly the same rate, this result might well be more the end-result of customer usage and priority (historical and present) than reflects the complexity of the maintenance. Ponder that with the fact that reducing the impact of maintenance on the flight line is not a new thing. Ever since the century series, simplification and rationalization has been a priority for the users.

I believe that the a plane that you like much, the AMX, has the same design philosophy. 😉

Malaysia Airlines turns to Morgan Stanley in recovery scramble

In an address to the Malaysian parliament on July 24, 2019, Deputy Minister Mohamed Farid Md Rafiq confirmed that the sovereign wealth fund of the government, Khazanah Nasional, has brought in global investment bank Morgan Stanley as an independent advisor in Malaysia Airlines recovery efforts.

The bank will assess possible options for the carrier’s future, including privatization. Khazanah is reportedly looking to finalize a deal by the end of the year, although the timeline is subject to change,Bloomberg writes citing people familiar with the matter.

“Khazanah is working with Malaysia Airlines Group Berhard to reassess its strategy and evaluate all strategic options, including proposals from external parties

I doubt that RB001 will have to be involved in any test flight. The training schedule already involves two flight on average per day. Not much time left to even download any “data”.
