Basically non-conclusive raw data. Don’t take me wrong, when compared to a single engined F16 with an F100/101 type of engine, it might make sense to choose a twin but this is, for one, not that straightforward and engine technology are now a world apart from those design.
For the former, think that a twin engine configuration on a small fighter has less space to be accommodated, use small single inlet that led to an increased assimetry of airflow, smaller diameter hence increased pressure and temperature etc… As you see, there are no free choices that can be made without bearing the consequences. It’s all about making the switch at the right time for the right airframe. Today is the right time.
F35 goes single. Raider (B21), an heavy bomber, goes twin (from 4 engine on the B1).
Those planes are 30 years old… We are discussing modern technologies not reenacting choices made at that time.
R&D is a living matter. It shapes new paradigms every once in a while 😉

No. One engine broke-off because the probabilities are higher with more engines. The redundancy is not a factor of safety as that single occurrence raises the odds of having an in-flight failure.
It’s difficult to understand (counterintuitive) and has already happened in aviation.
The next big future IS the single engined airliner. As written years ago, the problem is to lessen the consequences of an engine malfunction:
-a: by reducing the nbr of engines
-b: by focusing on what an engine loss really imparts on the system
-c: by adding the most logical alternative propulsion meaning in a failure occurrence… An engine designed for fuel economy during long-haul flight isn’t that solution .
You don’t understand: loosing an engine is what get you killed. It is scarcely something that don’t bear any consequences. Explosion, fire, catastrophic decompression, cascading effects, the odds to die are WITH a loss. This not a walk in the park, it’s an accident with potentially disastrous consequences.
You DO NOT want to loose an engine under any circumstances.
This twin vs single engine is today a nonsense and you know that. Think about the recent A380 engine failure: one out, three burning. What does it says: with 4 engines you have MORE than 4 times the probability to encounter an engine failure. That’s it. It does not improve the rate of malfunctions.
We are now living days where modern engine failures are so low that the odds are increased solely by adding complexity like multiplicating the number of engines for a single airframe.
