Since the organizers plan to round up 100+ airworthy P-51’s – it might well be possible that UK birds might migrate west, too.

This story is fishy – sorry folks – actually, Carr bent a FW-190 he had ‘borrowed’ for a local flight – but the action story is much more of a winner.
I do have high respect for all those known and unknown heros of WW2, but it’s sad that sometimes the records get slightly bent – I will come forward with the hard facts about above ‘incident’ as soon as I get home.

I think I have seen a photo of a Fury in that condition, taken somewhere in Australia.
It may even still be preserved now.
This one?
IIRC I have an old “Wings” or “Air Classics” issue with many photos.
drop me a PM if you need it.

Malcolm hoods were a British manufactured ‘local’ modification to US built aircraft operated in the ETO with the RAF plus 8th and 9th USAAF. Therefore the numbers for the hoods do not figure in the Parts Catalogs.
[Pedantic Mode ON] Not only P-51C’s (Dallas, TX, built) were equipped with Malcolm hoods, but also P-51B’s (Inglewood, CA, built) – originally the RAF Mustang III’s saw this modification, which was adopted by the USAAF [/Pedantic Mode OFF]
Ian – even if the pics you have are bad quality – I should be in a position to tell you whether it’s P-51ish or not. Drop me a mail martin[at]swissmustangs.ch
