[B/S MODE ON]maybe it’s a boasting thing – doesn’t it sound much more interesting and adventurous to have the retrieval of a junkpile from Russia on the records ? Maybe it’s downright boring just to rescue the one (junkpile) from just around the corner. It’s the air of mistery surrounding such a wreck brought back from the ‘wilderness’ [/B/S MODE OFF]
Honestly – I’d rather see the fire-dump queens and all those other neglected ‘restoration projects’ saved first.
Period.

Swiss – will email you larger shots!

To me it looks like a piece of glass that lay in the rubble of a bomber crash, and at one point part of the wreckage disintegrated further due to fire and heat (post impact) and eventually a red hot metal part ended up lying directly on top of this glass, causing such concentrated burn marks.
Experience from over 10 years of fire-fighting duty brings me to this conclusion.

Beautiful P-51…..

Thanks for that ! π

Who will be at La FertΓ© Alais mid-May ?
Mike J, AIB, who else (besides innocent little me) ?
Martin
nope – no Sea Fury canopy either !

okay – I concur with Laurent’s remark – the vertical frame contours are straight on the example shown in the first photos – the P-51B/C & Mustang III mods had curved lines throughout. See below photo of William W. Louie, crew-chief on 356th FS Mustangs

can you please e-mail me larger photos ?
I need to do some comparison tests to verify or eliminate the P-51 connection. And do you have some measurements, too ?
Thanks.

that always happens at GMT+1 – I always have to rewind time in order not to post an answer before the question is on.
:p :p :p
In fact “Donald” is a different P-51D now resident at Hendon. Isabel III moved to the RAF Museum, Cosford and is still in this livery.
