Lovely shot. How nice to see it with a “proper”nose.

Agreed. But why the hell do they insist on fitting those bloody underwing tanks! They were never fitted ‘in period’ during RAF service. And yes I know its an ex Swiss machine.

Accuracy. One thing AACF has never been big on!

VX888 was an NF38 which belonged to the TRE then based at Defford. TRE had used Martlesham as a base during the war. The aerials would have been part of a trials fit, radar, radio or something like it. TRE also had an all gloss black NF38 (which I think was the last production example). Between 1940 and 1994, with a few name and base changes along the way, the unit operated around 800+ aircraft of various types on radar related trials.

I think today this sort of work happens out of Boscombe Down?

Thanks guy’s. I’ll be looking to do model shoots with these sort of types next year. So any leads would be helpful? 🙂 I think I had mail from one or two guy’s on here but I’ve lost the mails that were sent. Dohh!

After seeing the the 50’s and 60’s GT racing over that weekend I think my girls would look good with some of them as well. 🙂 Aston, Ferrari, Jag, other anyone?

    Hello Gents,

Some notes that might be of interest.

WK163 arrived at Pershore in April 1959.
After being identified as a long term fleet aircraft the airframe was upgraded to Mk B6 standard. Fitted with new ‘wet’ wings and Avon 109 engines during its 1965-66 second line service.
In late 1971 the aircraft was withdrawn to second line servicing for partial reconditioning. The fwd fuselage was removed and fitted to Canberra B Mk6 WT327. WK163’s centre section was sent to BAC Warton for change of the main (DTD 683) centre section forging.

WK163 returned to service in mid 1972 fitted with the standard B6 nose section from Canberra B Mk6 XH568.

There is a lot more avialable on the histories of the teams aircraft . PM me for details if interested.

    Dave.

    Hi Gents,

Today’s cancellation has little to do with weather I fear. With the UK currently on the highest state of civil alert then it follows that all MOD establishments will be on the military equivalent. Those that post on here and are ex forces will know.

These conditions require 100% checks of ALL persons & vehicle’s entering MOD establishments whether for a public event or an ordinary working day for that matter. Simply put there is no way that the station would have the sufficient manpower to implement such checks. Faced with the situation the only thing they could do was to cancel the event.

THUM Flt was formed at Hooton Park in April 1951. The job was to carry out meteorlogical flights for the Central Forcasting Office at Dunstable. Thus freeing up RAF Units that had done the job beforehand.

The first three aircraft used were Spitfire XIXs PM549, PM577 & PM652. Later they had PM631, PS853 & PS915. All three of these machines are still extant and flying today. The flight moved to Woodvale in July 1951. The Spitfire’s were retired in 1957 when Mosquito’s took over the job.

Hope this helps, others will know more I’m sure.

Your right hand photo looks as if the panel was at one time fitted to ‘Charlie Uniform’ (white code letters) which was WJ682 a TT18 of 100 Sqn

39 as a Sqn will stand-down on 29 July with a full parade and the Sqn standard will be laid-up at St Clement Danes in London on 31 July.

When the PR9 goes the current reece systems that it employ’s will be lost permanently to the RAF as there is no planned replacement which could do the exact same job as well as the PR9.

As for the disposal of the three remaining aircraft, well, rumours are rife. Truth be told we’ll have to wait and see. All are showing their age.

    Last 3 a/c are XH131, XH134 and XH135.

Great to talk with some of you on Saturday. WK163’s history is not forgotten either thanks to a new stencil courtesy of Alan L.
