you know, i would have thought lift by a heli would be an almost perfect idea, but i remember, this was already discussed with respect to moving 724, and something about the vortices or something created by the wings damaged the engines in the chinook lifting it lol

I would hate to see a prefectly good lightning “cut” for no reason really. She is a LIVE airframe not a rotten wreck that has sat corroding for the last 20 years. Come on chaps I know it might be expensive but doesnt she deserve to be dismantled properly?

i think that buccsosiety was saying is that plans for this are currently in motion 🙂

This is all part of a plan that is being acted on at the moment, indeed, things should be a little clearer as to her future in the next few weeks or so.

thats got to be some of the best news ive heard for a while, even if it is tantalisingly vague 😀 i hope we find out soon…

Don’t know who the owners are – that’s why I added the post, to ask if there was any news. I’m not “writing her off” – just asking if anyone knows what’s going on.

As for my comment regarding towing the aircraft out, I don’t see why you would scoff at the notion – plenty of aircraft have been moved around this way, and it’s entirely feasible if the roads are wide enough (which I’m sure they are – even Lincolnshire’s roads are wider than a Lightning!). It’s certainly a better option than dismantling the aircraft. I suppose the problem would be getting permission to do it – and as has been mentioned, working-out where to take it!:)

i suppose the reality is, would an aircraft thats been grouneded for whats got to be not far off 20 years, be up to a 20 mile tow, even if the police allowed it, which realistically they wouldnt, didnt one of the sea vixens left have a great load of it chopped off so the police would allow a transit?

ok then, lets say that the money was availiable, how much would it cost, to have 724 dismantled properly, and roaded to another airfield where she could stretch her legs again, just a guestimate?

Always was a fan of the Belfast. Watched them many many times at STN as a lad (happy days)

I find it quite ironic that the new A400 when it enters service will be pretty much the same size, payload, and speed as the old girl 😎 The RAF clearly got it right first time round.

I think you’ll find that the 400m is going to be a bit faster, cruise speed is between mach 0.68-0.72. at 30,000 this roughly translates to 460mph, if you look at it in terms of performance figures, the RR Tyne’s Fitted To The Belfast Produced something like 5,700 Shp, now compare that figure to the performance of the Europrop TP400 from the A400m which produces 11,000shp (making it the most powerful western turboprop, the only more powerful turboprop being that in the Tu-95 “Bear” at something like 15,000 Shp) though the A400m will weigh 10 tonnes more, the more advanced aerodynamics incorporated in the design coupled with, double the power in engines, im sure will make it considerably faster than the belfast. 🙂

Tell me, is anyone SERIOUSLY interested in forming a group to buy this aircraft and return it to flight??

i would be, i could probably put about £500-700 towards buying it maybe even £1k
