But it would need to go to an airport.

If you think about the infrastructure required for modern day mass travel the actual runway is one of the smallest bits of construction.

It’s the passenger handling stuff that would still requite building even for a flying boat. You couldn’t just pull into a harbour and putter out in a motor boat any more.

PS Thanks to all those who posted the P6M material. Good looking aircraft huh?

The P6M was a stunning aircraft its rather odd considering that the USN had already started converting ships to act as tenders, she was very close to being operational. it broke some altitude and speed records in its early flights and was capable of more that 1100 km/h at 7000 metres. she would have been on hell of an aircraft.

fair point, just a hypothesis, and, of course you are right, its always tempting to try and justify building and operating the largest aircraft in the world 🙂

you wouldn’t though. it could be bought and operated by a cruise line for example, the facilities for unloading and loading such an aircraft are at most large ports. wouldn’t have other purposes for something like that, apart from skimming the waves at 300 mph, it could be used for loading other ships etc, they would also have the space and the money to run and maintain it. really would be a novelty using it to fly to your £30,000 cruise. i don’t know. certainly the companies who own the liners have provision to use and maintain one???

Wasn’t there a rather sexy jet-powered Martin flying boat planned or prototyped in the sixties?

I seem to remember making up a plastic kit of it.

    yeah
the Martin P6M seamaster, had some pretty impressive features for an aircraft of its size. apparently it had fighter like manouverability!

with a 17,000km range and with quite a reasonable top speed, without the need to go to an airport, i can see this as not being entirely useless, quite a novelty and with the ability to fly no stop transcontinental flights? i don’t know but still it has an interesting package to offer!

is that the 1/48 dynavector kit?i was considering buying one but thought that it could wait a bit 🙂 well i have talked around about building one of about 1/4 scale, i have found a suitable engine (s) and also a company who will build the retract system!!! all that remains is that i have a chat with the CAA (large model association) who seem to look rather grim at the prospect of someone my age wanting to build a model like this :confused:that is an awesome diorama there though!

to be honest, i really don’t know why they aren’t after the one at BAe Filton??? wasn’t that the last one to fly? surely that would be a better candidate? i was there on work experience not so long ago, and i spoke to one of the people about it, its had its hydraulics drained etc, but still easier as its in this country and isn’t owned by the french???:diablo:

considering that its cost nearly 6 million pounds to get XH558 back to airworthy status, and that was after she had been kept active and maintained for all those years. it will take a lot of money manpower and commitment, political backing is ok, financial backing is the key! with the exception of the £1 million that branson has said he will give, there is no mention of where the rest is to come from. with a total cost that will surpass XH558 massively. i have to agree with david and say NO!

Well it had to happen I suppose – put my two-penneth in and got my head well and truely bitten off, chewed and spat out at the end… 😮
Read through the attacks after my post here…. Here

I don’t think I’ll bother responding in there and lowering myself to their standards….. 🙁

I can see why you didnt respond to any of those, i dont think any of those plonkers have a half brain. it seems to me that Urban Exploration is just a posh term for “Trespass” but, when you are dealing with people who cannot use words that involve more than two syllables, and also use the word “Geezer” in polite conversation, there isnt much you can do to get a smiple message across!

maybe it might be something to do with the fact that a civilian would be flying an aircraft that could outperform the RAF? :D:D:D jokes would be good to see a lightning fly in the uk but as you say, they can be dangerous. (RAF would get jealous:P)
