LM’s new mantra (post Nunn-McCurdy breach): “Buy the F-35- it’s full of S-H-I-T!!”

I thought the PAK-FA flew with an entirely new engine of some sort. I also heard that a new engine would be integrated in the spring some time. So what’s the truth at this point? Is the 117 a “new engine”?

    The ‘117’ (aka AL-41F1) was flight-tested aboard Su-27M b/n 710 in Jan. prior to PAK-FA flights. Incoporates much AL-41F tech, moreso than 117A & C and pushes 15T (compared to 15.5T of the F119).

The brand-new 5G engine is ~a decade away.

Interview with the guy who designed it and that monster- the AL-41F, Victor M. Chepkin (legible google-translate):

Q&A with Ilya Fyedorov, Executive Director of NPO Saturn:

    – Минобороны уже контрактует серийные “изделия 117” или пока финансирует только двигатели для испытаний?

Has the MoD already contracted for the series production of “Article 117”, or is only financing the engines for the duration of testing?

The [MoD’s] money was not invested/used. An equal share was invested by Sukhoi, UMPO and Saturn for the modification of the 117S. The MoD has already allocated the financial resources for the engines of serially produced fighters. I believe, that in three years all the latest Sukhoi warplanes will fly with the ‘Article 117’. It’s a very good engine, practically fullfilling the requirements of the “fifth generation engine”, as regards thrust and [flight] regimes.

Where will series production of the ‘Article 117’ take place?

At the moment 18% is produced by ‘Saturn’, and 82% by UMPO. When large-scale production starts, full-scale sourcing to Ufa will occur. Obviously, our lost earnings in this situation would have to be re-imbursed. But that’s for ODK to resolve.

Have you undertaken negotiations with ‘Salyut’ about co-operating on an engine for the PAK-FA?

As the leader of this sector of Project PAK-FA within the ODK, I’m kept up-to-date on developments. A branch of the ODK will undertake negotiations with ‘Salyut’ over this issue. But the final word rests with the customer, which is the MoD.

Looks like ‘117s’ all round (including Su-30MKI?)……let’s see what MMPP Salyut has to say about that…

India negotiating with Russia for 42 more Su-30MKIs

Yeah, ‘Interfax’ is reporting that this is nearly a done deal now, between the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rosoboronexport & Irkut, for ~$3.5Bn.

    http://lenta.ru/news/2010/03/03/su30mki/

More details will follow during Putin’s India visit shortly. I think these 42 will incorporate the MLU (Phase IV) upgrade currently under negotiation, as per delivery time-frame.

    272 Su-30MKIs, WOW!!

    Not new, but relevant:

The ITAE and its partners use plasma technology for applying ceramic coatings to the exhaust and afterburner. Multi-layer coatings formed from microparticles of dielectric, metal, or semi-conductor material are deposited by an arc-discharge plasma under atmospheric pressure. Challenges include the need to keep the ceramic bonded to the metal structure over a wide temperature range (600°C to 1,200°C), despite the fact that the materials have widely different thermal-expansion characteristics. The coating materials also need to maintain constant electrical characteristics in the face of widely varying temperatures. Researchers describe this problem as “partially solved,” and engines treated with ceramic RAM have already been flight-tested.

Thanks for the pics Quadro, fantastic!!

Without drawing lines or debating the nature of those yellow, slightly convergent rectangular panels (which I believe to be the ‘roof’ of the S-duct), the barrel of the cannon is directly line-of-sight of the centre of the compressor face.

There’s your lateral curve PiBu ;).

so is that gray stuff the new stealth coating?

No, that’s the static tester (T-50-0?) and cockpit simulator @ Moscow, Putin visited Sukhoi HQ recently.
    V. nice pics/stills flateric, thanks. Plane looks fantastic!!

I wonder if that new HUD will be on the Su-35S?

    USS,

There’s very little news regarding the MMRCA trials of the MiG-35 in the Russian media- One can almost sense a feeling of resignation.

You’re probably right on the MiG-29K single-seater being converted to near MiG-35 specs, along with the old ’29M2- remember the loud noises by MiG of a production representative ’35 @AeroIndia’07- never happened. I don’t think MiG has money for fuel these days.

MMRCA trials are due to be completed in April, as you well know from BR forum, the ’35 is said to have performed poorly in the 2/3 stages thus far.

Regarding ‘Zhuk-AE’, 2 production representative (1064 T/R mod) are believed to be under test at present.

However, the first Russian military aircraft with AFAR/AESA will not achieve operational readiness before 2010. In the event of losing [the MMRCA tender] it is possible that the ‘Zhuk-AE’ radar will be installed aboard the 2nd follow-on order of the MiG-29K/KUB (~30 aircraft) for the Indian Navy.

    http://www.militaryparitet.com/html/data/ic_news/156/

Also probably for the RuNavy aircraft ordered.

So maybe some good news……however, Phazotron-NIIR is due in court on March 10th over a $10mn loan default, so we’ll have to wait and see.

If the Mig-35 wins this tender, they get the best bang for the bucks no doubt.
    All so the best ToT.
And it fits very well with the current Migs and weapons systems IAF are operating today.

Imho, the MiG-35 is the least likely victor. However, it looks like the Russkies will be bagging 29 more MiG-29Ks, 50 more Su-30MKIs & FGFA/PAK-FA……they’ll be happy with that.

The biggest gainer is the Indian Air Force that has been allocated Rs 15,205 crore to purchase aircraft and aero-engines, which may include finalising a fresh deal to buy 50 additional Su-30 MKI fighters and zeroing on an imported engine for LCA Navy.

    http://www.deccanherald.com/content/55194/marginal-hike-defence-outlay.html

The only way the MiG-35 may get a look-in is if the IAF adopts a high-cost & low-cost mix like Eurocanards & MiG-35. I think for political reasons the US contenders should be avoided altogether.

    Was true? Relatively.
The above cited folk talked about the irreversible inability of the Russian aeronautic industry to build AESA and 5th generation fighters. This seems to me a loss of ability for a long, long time. No just 10 years. Anyway the same big talkers are claiming now “Well is just a prototype, errhhh, it have no radar!” and words like this. PAK-FA got them rabid.

Isn’t the PAK-FA development programme Govt. funded ’till 2015? I don’t recall the MiG 1.44 or S-37 ‘winning’ any RuAF/MoD competitive tender or receiving any state funding- didn’t the 1.44 nearly bankrupt MiG?

Reading those Official Russian Govt. documents last year highlights how (politically & militarily) fundamental this project is. Once the Indian Govt. sign s the contracts during Putin’s visit to New Delhi next week- all this dribble of ‘vapourware’ can be laid to rest.
We might also get an indication of how much has already been spent, what is roughly the “substantial” financial Indian contribution, and where is it directed- it won’t just be for the FGFA.

The T-50 is a prototype, statement of intent- moreso.

That would depend on what sort of kit the 82nd would need on their ‘pilgrimage’.

ok, this is a much improved version, more accurate to scale thanks to beloved MKI, still far from perfect though.

Here’s something else. If you look at the pic below, there’s ample room for a (staggered) central 3rd pylon between the two existing ones- use their clearance from the bay wall as reference (also note the T-50’s bay is wider):

    http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=182146&d=1266688600

Hence, the pylons should look like the Raptor’s arrangement, but 3×3 in tandem, instead of 6 abreast. So, imho, your latest rendition is accurate. 🙂

I gave it a try, and appearently, 2 R-77Ms is perfectly feasible, but 3, in an asymmetric manner, like R-37s on MiG-31Ms, is not. 3 x R-73Ms is also feasible.

I made two models with two possible configurations, in the first one, it is impossible to fit 3 R-77s asymmetrically.

Are you sure? I read somewhere that the Su-35S will have dual (abreast) launchers for the R-77M between the nacelles. Question is, how wide are those bays on the T-50?

    Su-30MKI for reference:
