Hi Scooter, I like the AHRLAC, seen it before. Though, I am not sure how the STOL performance will work out, specially in hot and high conditions. Looks good for COIN but doesn’t seem to have enough for a more conventional setting…

Jonesy & Frank, Nice one! Yes, something like that but problem is with a pusher the STOL performance suffers.

Fedyakin, I like it but maybe the wing chord could be shorter for low level CAS. think Stuka, but modernized and designed with simplicity and mass production in mind. Think optimized for PGM and ATGM delivery rather than dive bombing…

For CAS in contested airspace i would chose neither.

Twin jet, stealthy approach and a robust design would be my starting point.

Hi Tu22m, your solution would be costly, and would take valuable resources away from a2a which is capital in a contested airspace situation.

Orko, the answer kind of applies to your post as well – will cost way too much, will need proper airbases, and will be prime targets for enemy a2a.

If the UK really was serious about a high/low mix the perfect aircraft consists of many parts already made in britain and stuffed with british electronics. Instead of an F404 variant, it could be fittet with an EJ-200 making it the perfect low in this high/low mix. 😉

You probably mean the gripen but the jf17 also uses british parts and is designed on an open architecture philosophy, allowing fast and easy indigenization. What’s more it has an advantage on low altitude range, key for a good cas platform. Sorry don’t want to derail the thread… please continue…

If the deal goes through, this is what the PAF circa 2020 could look like approximately:

    110 J-10s/ F-16s High end 25% of fleet
    200-250 JF-17s (Blocks I, II, III) Mid-range 50% of the fleet
100 F-7PG / Mirage ROSE Low end 25% of the fleet
    400-450 Fighters

This will be supplemented by modest numbers of Chinese LR-SAMs – HQ-18s

Overall perhaps one of the most powerful air forces in the world. Only behind China, US, Russia and India.

Hi Y20, that could make more long term sense. 1.3 billion is the inside info. J10b was the educated guess. Pak planners are very risk averse and unlikely to invest in an untested and risky platform as the j31, but you could just be right…

Or for all we know it could be for CAC’s equivalent of the j31…

Hi orko, no specific info except that the tweets in paf are slated to serve longer. Spare parts sounds right.

Pakdef is reporting that a FC-20 / J-10B purchase is imminent on the cards, as funds worth $1.3 Billion has been released to the PAF…

    I think that’s enough money for about 36 J-10Bs…

I agree, should’ve made the 2nd fixed wing aircraft a different type.
but if they HAD to go “lo”,
still many other better options than jf-17.

    such as the Gripen.
not only does the UK have experience operating it.. you could say its the spiritual descendent of the BAe P106

Hi Y20, didn’t wish to interrupt the discussion, thus… 😉

Since budget is the consideration… gripen would be the secondary choice. Also consider how much more effective it would be than a hawk in the two basic missions the uk faces, tu95 flights and airliner intercepts. Would also be a popular choice in terms of uk’s large pakistani community.

Sorry guys for interrupting an interesting discussion…

Maa1A is official. Maa1b no idea, probably not, although officially interest has been shown and slated to be produced this year.

I find it interesting they went for the pirhanna / jhmcs combo. Must be pretty unique.

Thanks Rii and BringitOn. Point taken, I wasn’t talking about the f35 unlike the diacussion from the other thread, just trying to think of alternative development pathways by other programs. Guess DAS is more sensible for emcon.

Conversely, if a ucav had eodas and eots, and no radar, I wonder how acceptable the disadvantage would be. I recall distiller once talking about it or sanem.

Thanks wilhelm and f18 for answering my question ! 🙂

Paf has maa1a, may receive the b and is definitely in line for the adarter. Adarters for the jf17 possibly with Archer hmds, kind of similar to the jhmcs. The f16s are rumored to have the pirhanas but no official confirmation or pics.

I think the point is best made that militaries have hiatorically made mistakes in their utilization or the lack thereof, of new technological waves. We saw this in ww1 and 2, there is good reason therefore to take heed of people claiming the same is happenning as we move forward into a new wave of technology, as Alvin Tofler notes – the third wave.

Interesting. The JHMCS at least the earlier version if not II is on the PAF F-16s. Recently there was a rumor that PAF was using MAA-1 Pirhanas with the JHMCS. Does anyone know if that is possible? If not, it would be a good way to eliminate that rumour and the reliability of the source…
