Those are really good! Love the first pic.

That shed you made a pic of, which airline is that? And what camera do you have?

    Imagine yourself this scene:

a beautiful meadow in a nice hilly area, the nearest motorway or indeed airway being 50km away so it is nice and quiet. You picture the scene?

Well, I live about 5000 km away from that place in the (cough) lovely (cough) village of Zelhem. Zelhem can be found, but it is far from easy, in the Achterhoek. Basically, it is one of those places you will only ever visit when you let your wife read the roadmap.

By the way, when you translate the name “Achterhoek” into English you get something like “beyondcorner/backarea”. That should say enough I would have thought.

No seriously, this place is dull.

That place ain’t blocked by construction. It is ONLY used for landings so you will see the planes on final approach.

There is one snag… it is quite hard to reach without a car, but it is possible. You can take the free bus (forgot the number, 190?) to the BA head office. From there you will have to walk to the spot.

If you look at A330crazy’s pic you can see a large grey building in the top of the photo, roughly in the middle. If I am not mistaken this is the BA buidling (not sure, I haven’t been there for a fwe months). From here you will have to walk. It will be at least half an hour!

it would make the plane so heavy it would never lift of. Also, the walls would be so thick you would need a widebody to have 3 or 4seats per row. Not quite economical.

They still haven’t found the Bijlmer CVR’s, so if you get your scuba gear on you might perhaps possibly find it in the lak at the nearby park. 😀

    Or otherwise Israel?

My best guess, they misloaded it. They placed to much cargo in the back and to little in the front. This shifted to centre of gravity to far backwards causing it to tilt.

It happens every now and then, usually with cargo planes. Not with passenger planes.

Actually, the last on isn’t from the Dutch Marines, but from the Dutch Navy. Slight difference, but enough to get your ass kicked to hell and back by a Dutch Marine!

    Just to warn you. 😉

    Gotta love the EuroJP:

    Reg : HZ-AB3
    Plane : B727-2U5 (A/RE) (super 27/winglets)
    C/N : 22362/1657
    Airline : Al Anwa

    Reg : HZ-MIS
    Plane : B737-2K5 (advanced)
    C/N : 22600/816
    Airline : Saudi Government

I can’t find the last one. If you give me the plane type I might be able to do more.

I’m sure I’ll have a great time and hopefully get some good shots

Will you be posting some here?

Unfortunately I can’t join you since I have to work.

    Interflug62M
a great place for buying model aircraft…gone now I expect

There still is a planemodel shop at Schiphol Airport. It is landside as well! It is located at the “Schiphol Plaza” shopping centre. This is the same centre that has the train station, so it sounds like it is the same one.
This shop is really great for models and some magazines, but not much else. If you are really into books (various languages, all European as well as Russian, Ukranian and no doubt more) and magazines, flight sims and model kits (the ones you build yourself) as well as pre-fab models there is a better store. This is the store I described in my previous post. The one with the decapitated windmill.

http://www.lhshop.nl/lhshop.asp website in English only, also includes more detailed instructions on how to get there.

    Interflug62M
seeing my first real Interflug IL62M on the ramp at SPL

Wow! I never knew Interflug flew the IL-62 to Schiphol! I do have got a picture of a Tu-134A of interflug (DM-SCR)! Unfortunately my dad’s scanner is crap so I can’t make a good scan of it. If only I had a digital back then…

Note for the overly serious, I am aware that digitals weren’t around yet 12 years back.

The 747 is from Kalitta Air. Martinair still has 747 (they just got a new one a few weeks back, B747-200SUD PH-BUH ex KLM).

To go to the spot you can take the 191, 193 and 198 to the spot. Get of at the bus stop called “Aalsmeerderweg” (just ask the driver to give an announcement, they won’t do it unless you ask). Please make sure you are on the south bound bus, this is the bus driving through parking P30. The bus stops at the bus lane furthest away from Schiphol Plaza.

When you are at the bus stop, you have to get into Aalsmeerderweg. This is the first road on your left (looking into the direction of the bus you just got of from) running parralel to runway 06/24. After a 24 minute stroll you will be there.

There are two spots. The official one and the notquitesoofficial one. The official one will give you when the runway is used for take-offs (most common):

    http://www.jetphotos.net/images/images2/0/02082003-009-01.jpg.jpg.10664.jpg.thumb

When the runway is in use for landings you get:

When you walk a bit further you will find the taxiway linking to S-apron with civilization. Here you can make close-ups of planes. To put things in comparison, I made a side-on shot of the B777-300ER with my 50mm camera with very little room to spare. Here too pictures can be made of planes on the runway, though you will be to far for rotation shots.

In between this spot and the official spot there is the notquitesoofficial spot, a grass field. Just sit here, there will be no problem. Here the smaller planes (A320/B737) rotate, but the bigger ones (A340/B747) will just race by.

In Holland you have to buy a “strippenkaart” to use the bus. This can be done in the bus, but at a HEFTY premium. The bus fare is 3 strips. Holland is divided into zones, and you have to pay on strip for each zone plus one extra per journey. You are best of buying a “15-strippenkaart”. This will be give you more then enough of strips. Even though you will not have ot use all strips (I can guarantee you that), you will still be cheaper of because of the premium fare on the bus.
These cards can be bougth at Schiphol Plaza in the book-shop and at the train desks. Your hotel might also sell them.

If the weather is bad you might want to stop at “Aalsmeerderbrug” (line 198 only). A few stops further from “Aalsmeerderweg”. There you will find the largest aviation store in Europe, or so they claim. Whether that claim is justified or not, it is huge! Get of at the bus stop, and look for an old windmill on your left. It won’t have the spinner anymore, but it will have the shop! And mind the steps when walking down the embankment, they are steep and can be slipery!

To take the car to the spot (from schiphol plaza/car rentals), just follow the signs to parking P30. Do not got there, but follow the road. At the end of the road go to the left. The first road on the left is the Aalsmeerderweg. Go in there and you will find the spot. Parking is free. To go to the aviation shop, you should not go left into the Aalsmeerderweg, but continue the road. Before the bridge you will find the shop on the left. You will lilkely only see a decapitated old windmill. Don’t ask me for directions to a parking spot, don’t know!

Going to bed now, have to get up 5 hours from now to go to work. DOH

Well done on the jumping 737

Well, this one was merely a lucky shot. I did not know in advance it would be bumping. I just clicked the button and due to the shutter lag I got myself this bumping plane. Still love this shot though!

I am heard about the McDonalds viewing area, near my hotel(ETAP) is this any good?

I do not know the hotel. I do know the McDonalds spot though! In the very early morning it is okay. Rather soon though the sun will be facing you. If you are on a registration hunt this may not be a problem, if you are coming for pictures this is a mayor problem.
Another disadvantage of the MacDonalds spot is that it is not always used. In fact, quite often it is not used because some of the approach paths go over Amsterdam. Its all about noise abatement at Schiphol, planes come here at a distant 2nd. This runway is only used when the wind comes from the West/East. For landings (wind from west) the planes come by close enough. For take-offs (wind from east) this spot is useless. The planes are way to high up.

You’d be better of going to the Kaagbaan, runway 06/24. This is the spot where most of the pics above where made from. It is accesible by public transportation, provided you do not mind to walk the last bit. At 15 to 20 minutes the walk is rather long, but well worth it! The bus will take you 15 minutes so the total travel time from Schiphol center is about half an hour one way!
Oh, and this spot is in the middle of nowhere. If it starts raining, you need to take a leak or are hungry/thirsty you are on your own. A mobile snack shack comes over during the lunch hour for people working in that area!
This runway is virtually always in use. Therefore it is quite popular. I have never seen fewer then 30 people there, mind you, I live rather far away and only go when I know the weather will be favourable!

If you require (bus) directions just e-mail me. If I have the day of I might even join you!

Pelita Air from Fokker F70 all the way from Indonesia doing a test landing at Rotterdam airport. It just came from Fokker’s maintenance fascilities at Woensdrecht. Not much later it was transferred to KLM Cithopper (who else?).

Last one, a YAK-42 from LAT Charter. This plane came in instead of the regular Air Moldova yak-42. The plane is always parked at the G-platform and always very close to the fence.

If you have a small step ladder or something you can get excellent pictures. I made this picture with my digital F717. The body can rotate around its axis, big advantage because now I can point the lense over the fence and look at the viewer to see what I am shooting!

It is a walking distance away from the terminal. Especially in the morning this can be interesting for a quick visit. In the morning Garuda parks its 747 here, as well as a UA 777. Usually you will also find one or more KLM planes, often one of the many Fokker 100’s and 737’s but also big stuff, including the 747!

You also have views over the odd G-gates (G-1, G-3, G-5 etc). They are mostly used by Martinair and the airlines form the US, but not NW.
