I highly respect Tom Neil and his opinion. I have heard lots of stories/accounts (like others here) about Douglas Bader from the ‘horses mouth’ so to speak. At the end of the day, it takes all sorts to fight and win a war. SDB was an inspiration, both in the war and afterwards, not least to millions of disabled people with his can do must do attitude – a legacy that lives on. Sure he was brash and had many of the ‘qualities’ needed of a single seat fighter pilot. Like any other pilot and member of the Few, he did his bit allowing me to sit hear today and type this.
