I watched John Watts flying a superb impromptu display at Parham, home of the 390thBG. Superb flying, such a loss

Lovely! Probably more likely than not capillary gauges. It would be mph. I have original pilots notes so can get a pic if not done earlier by the F F (forums finest)

Nice stuff there! A box of later war/50s stuff, a nice Spit type RPM, undercarriage switch also suitable for typhoon. Beam app indicator, turret oxy gauge, std drift knee pad, ht course ias thingy standard fit to many aircraft incl spit, hurri, tyffie etc etc. Later type iffswitch box for signalling code of day using nav lights – part of identification, friend or foe.

As an aircrafts operational life is extended and extended, it is a fact of life that it becomes less ‘original’ in terms of the metal and original components it started with. This is necessary as safety is paramount. It is a nebulous argument as even the most original aircraft that have flown continuously since ‘born’ (I.e. PZ865, MH434, LF363 etc) have had to have parts replaced to keep airworthy. They do have a link to their original self and such replacement is natural wear and tear.

What I like is that, in this case, we can please all the people all the time if they just adopt common sense. We can use non airworthy parts to enhance and originalise further the museum examples.

Would be a nice item for the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection museum. I live near Amesbury and would be happy to try and identify the parts if required?

That is a very small amount. The hatch shape etc is very similar to a oil tank filler on the B17, but each engine took 37gals.

This type of thread always goes the same way and reflects human nature in all its bizarre forms. Compromise is the best course.
You have the right to like/love/loathe it. But accept that others do also.
Accept it is a wonderful and beautiful achievement. Accept we have more original library type versions in museums to pore over if that is what you want. Accept others opinions but don’t force yours on everyone. Accept that continual repetition of your opinion won’t mean it is heard or necesssarily wanted. Most of all, accept that this is a tired argument and move on.
