I saw this aircraft at the Tollerton races . The engineer was Dick Veall. Last news on Charles Masefield he was testing a Nimrod AEW.3 at RAE Bedford before it closed in 1994 doing overweight trials.
Many thanks FW190 for replying. Does anybody know the date when the clipped wing Spitfire was introduced ?
Best book on Sutton Bridge is “Combat Ready” by Alastair Goodrum, 1997 published by GMS Enterprises,Graham Simons is a regular on here and may be able to help.
G-ALAW quite possibly Skegness Ingoldmells, the wings were in the rafters 1966.
Superb photos, beats all the look-a-like types flying today.
It was delivered to the US Army Air Force on 15 Sept 1943 being assigned to Oran,North Africa just one month later. No date is given for further assignments to the US 12th Air Force and it became surplus to requirements on 01 Apr 1946. On 02 August 1949 it was registered to SGACC as F-BEIG.
My source “Douglas DC-3 Survivors” Vol 2 by Arthur Piercey. 1988 Aston Publications.
Ian Mason was as good guy he let me see the Tempest TT.5 NV778 at Cardington. My father flew this aircraft at 233OCU Pembrey. I remember Black 6 breaking his leg on a ground run he was pretty cheerful about it.
Thanks to both Wiesso and Flyer for the info. The aircraft looks to be in Natural Metal with white top decking and black logo and fin stripe.
Thanks for the replies on this little known use of Mariners into 1958. I thought the accident was caused by the starboard propellor going into reverse pitch .
How did the event go ? I was sleeping off night shift so unable to attend.
So pleased that I got the Air Britain files on the Lancaster,Halifax and Whitley. Also the Confound and Destroy books by Martin Streetly on No 100 Group . Is the author still around ?
This is a good website for airfields http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/showthread.php?1068-North-Coates
The fleet must be close to their airframe life and pressurisation cycles to continue flying ?
Thanks for the link Jon H although I am not from the Liverpool era very interested in aviation in that area ie Burtonwood and Stretton interesting stuff thanks again to the persons responsible for the Starways history.
http://www.poulton.info/familyhistory/War%20Memorial%203.htm This covers RAF North Coates ,
Try ” Lincolnshire Air War” by S Finn hard to find though or Mike Hodgsons “Lincolnshire Airfields”1982. Try inter library loan . Try googling “Beaufighter Squadrons” as these and Hudsons were used during the war at North Coates.
