Thanks Inkworm, I have been on 12hr night shifts so missed it. Hope details of the dig are made known on here.
Good luck with the new machine. I think the Colt had more charm and character. Of interest http://vansaircraft.com/public/rv-4int.htm and weight & balance http://vansaircraft.com/pdf/RV4wb.pdf
There are some good second hand bookshops in Holt with some aviation. Worth looking at Bircham Newton windmill for the views. The old airfield and pub at Langham is worth a look. Also the airfield and church at Little Snoring. The church has a scoreboard from the Mosquitoes based there. Don’t forget to get samphire and cockles at Well’s !!
G-AKNN was used for parachuting at Podington circa 1963-65 and continued in this role at Dunkeswell.
I flew there in July,1967 in KA-7 “353” with Mr Marshall, and T-21 “212” with canopy. The winch cable used old Martin-Baker drogue chutes. I can remember a cable break and a large length of cable and chute drifting across the busy A46 to safely land the other side. My father used to aero-tow the gliders with a RAF Chipmunk borrowed from Cranwell, and he would hop across to Waddington to re-fuel. Would also fit in tows at Spitalgate and Hemswell as well.
Oggsplosh,
I disagree with your statement. More pilots are killed attempting to turn back to the airfield,in an emergency. Far better to land ahead. 🙂
These photos have the “wow” factor thank you for posting . Some missing C-47 information .
